It's very common, I know, but last night another livery's energiser was stolen.
Mine wasnt as it's quite hidden away, but other than hiding it away what can I do to try to deter people from stealing it?

The only think I can really think of is mark it with a marker.

I've got a metal box that becomes electrified when attached to the energiser. Had it three years and no theft. It locks the whole thing inside as well as the battery.

My OH bought it so can't post a link at min but highly recommend.

Sounds fantastic but how do you get the energiser and battery out without getting shocked yourself? I'd be interested to know more about the thing.

We have smothered our energiser in smartwater with a label to warn and put our postcode all over it in indelible pen and hidden it. We have been left alone for a year now so hoping that what we are doing is working.

I know someone who caught a thief red handed when he fixed rape alarms to the energisers with fishing line (practically invisible)

He had been sitting up in the caravan waiting but had fallen asleep (there had been a false alarm the night before when a raccoon set it off) the alarm went off, thief ran around in circles and gave himself up when he was confronted by an extremely grumpy man with two enthusiastic German Shepherds (on the leash) He did try to run, but friend asked if he thought he could outrun 'the boys'

Huge embarrassment when it turned out to be a relative of an owner - it didn't get reported as it was dealt with 'in-house'

Rape alarms are also extremely useful on yard gates.

Of course you have to get the horses used to it first so that they don't all have heart attacks.

We use rape alarms on storage shed doors and our central heating oil tank.(use it as a trip wire) They work a treat. Thieves very soon find out that adrenaline is brown!

I have a metal box. Secured to the ground by one of those dog tie things......like a giant corkscrew. Energiser and battery fit inside the box and it's locked with 2 padlocks.
Wouldn't stop anyone really determined but hopefully secure enough to send them on their way looking for easier pickings.
Other thing it does is stop anyone turning my energiser off (was a problem for person who used to be in next field to me as we have a public footpath through the field) ..... you need to unlock the box to do that.

Love the idea of a rape alarm on an oil tank. Our neighbours have had theirs stolen three times in the last year, so will pass that on.

We have a cast iron box that we could put the energiser in and padlock. Never got round to it yet, the thing is rignt in the yard at the moment, the only time we had it stolen was in the middle of a field down the lane. We have a strong suspicion who had it too, but can't prove it.

Aha, that'll be it then!!! LOL. I didn't know what we were talking about really. It is all clear to me now. However, if you switch it off what stops our thief from doing the same??

You see the little black keys in the pic on the side? Once the box is all locked up those switch the circuit on and off so you can change the battery etc. Only you have those keys so the theif cant do it. He could however risk a zap and cut the circuit however he'd still have to either unbolt the thing from the post or bolt cut the padlock to get the battery/energiser but if you use one of these padlocks below tht would be nigh on impossible

Oh I see now. One more thing and then I promise to shut up, if the box is effectively live then surely it is draining the battery. If so how often does one need to recharge? Thanking you, this is all very helpful.

Also do you concrete the box to the ground or what?

^^ This I have similar - a heavy small feed bin which I put slabs in to make it heavy also. Energizer is staked through a drilled slit in the bottom. Whole thing is locked - seems to work well - I have bno need to go in there are have fencer attached via croc clip :)

Mine is attached to a stake in the ground from B and Q and my daring OH changes the battery for me once a fortnight or so depending on how long grass has grown round my tape/rope. He reckons he gets zapped quite frequently but at least the battery is weaker then.

Wish I'd seen this before mine got stolen! I was sooooo angry, & the they also broke the post & rail climbing over.

Rape alarm plus our 2 Rottweilers would have done nicely.
