I bought mine from ebay as i think they were the cheapest when i looked around-they do sell starter kits which have everything you need and at quite good prices!

I bought a starter kit a few years ago, I think it was from Farm care??? it was about £150. I googled Electric fencing and looked for the best deal. My advice would be to upgrade the fence posts to longer ones as the ones in the kit are quite small, also to make your fencing stronger put wooden fence posts at all corners and every so often along the stretch if you are doing a long stretch, also use two runs of tape.

that unit would be fine for what you want, although check garuntee's as drivall and hotline units although a little more expensive carry a two year garuntee (sp!) also the best battery to use is a leisure battery availible from ag merchants or caravan shops, these are designed to be constantly run down and charged up, car batteries are not and will not last anywhere near as long.

I've got an electric shepard, he gives one hell of a shock, I touched it accidently and my finger was still throbbing 5 mins later. I used to have a fenceman and I could hold the tape and hardly feel a thing.

If I remember rightly you need to fence off a public footpath? If that the case it will be a fairly permanent arangement. In that case I would not bother with plasic stakes but go for wooden round stakes. We got some for about £1.50 each (cheaper than plastics). You can then get a bucket of insulated rings or clip which you screw on and attach your tape or rope to. Dont try knocking them in with a sledge hammer, use a post knocker (big thing that goes over the post). The result will be a much stonger, cheaper and less stealable (not sure if thats a word) fence.

You may want to think about getting something lockable to put your energiser in. After I had my energiser stolen I bought a little 'shrike'. OH welded a box up which I chained and padlocked to a ring in one of the fence post. I also ensure its out of sight of the public - sad world we live in.

Be very careful with buying through Ebay. I did - after checking that the energiser was right for an outside temporary fence etc. It came but the instructions clearly said not suitable for outside use. I emailed the supplier who refused to refund. I demanded a refund and returned the item to him. He then denied receiving in (yeh!). I was then about £70 out of pocket and had to buy another one! He is a 'specialist' supplier but very dodgy! Buy it locally is my recommendation!

Decide on how long your fence will need to be, remember to double it if you want 2 strands. Then look at the spec of each energiser to see that it can handle the length of fence. Then decide if you want it mains powered, rechargable battery powered (Leisure Battery) or disposable battery. Then do you want plastic posts or do you want wooden stakes & insulators. Then decide do you want tape or rope, I prefer rope it remains tighter & doesn't blow around in the wind & is neater.

I bought all my stuff from 'Paddock Perfection' & 'Farmcare' who both trade on Ebay.

If you are fencing along a footpath you are required by law to have warning notices position every so often along the fence warning people.

You can also pick up a brochure on fencing & it is an invaluable tool to decide what & how much you want.
