Unfortunately at this time of year when the majority of them are wearing rugs they don't feel the zap from the fence so they can just barge through. They really need to learn about electric fence before the winter weather so they keep away.

If your battery is kept charged & you haven't exceeded the recommended length of tape/rope for the energiser & have kept plant/bush growth clear of the tape/rope then there should be ample power to give then a deterring zap.

Thanks everyone. Field is too far away from mains (!) Its a coloured vanner yearling cob who trashed 2 fences yesterday and one in another field last week. Hes taking other youngsters with him. Im worried there will be a nasty accident. Owner not really bothered.

What is the reason for trashing???? Do they having anything to eat, or is the grass simply greener on the otherside.

I would set up some electric fencing. You don't need to be by the mains - and it's not really advisable for horse fencing anyway - cattle yes. You just need a battery and the relevant kit.

My Welshie is terrible for this. I have to keep the electric fence on all the time and she is constantly walking the perimeter to see if it is working or not (she can hear the buzz). It reminds me of Jurassic Park and the velocerapters (sp?) who kept throwing themselves at the fence to test it out!

my boy runs through electric fencing too and when I took his rug off so he could feel it and put it up to 6ft he jumped it!!! I have now post and railed his fields and put electric on them! Make sure you get thick wood for the rails tho as he even went through one of them! He tries them out now but knows there is no way he can get through!!! I got the wood from a local fencing place - it is all second hand but certainly does the job - they are always chucking bits away that they take down before they put a new one up - bit pricey otherwise!! Good luck x

Just a relief to know others have same prob. sorry not helpful though. My 2 year old Fell demolishes fences, gates everything. Had stock fencing all replaced with post and rail as she kept getting wrapped up in it and pulling it off now she climbs up and stands on the top rail instead. Got both front feet through field gate a month ago and pulled it off the hinges then dragged it 20 ft into the field luckily we were there!! She stood looking at us as if to say 'well help then' calm as you like even though i thought she was about to break her legs!!! And yes straight through electric!!

our yearling trashes fences too, she walks casually through electric as if its not there where as my others are terrified of it, the youngster also clears the 3 1/2 foot fencing to get into the other fields, the only solution would be quality post and rail, would cost me more than the fillies worth to do four acres in it though haha.

Have thought about a gun many times, especially three days ago when she wrapped herself in the stock fencing and electric thats on the top, her front end was over the fence in the other field and back end in the near field, had to cut the little blighter out! So that field isnt in use now until i can afford to get it post and railed, Thank goodness for my professionally built paddock fencing!
