my 7 yr old mare is in an isolation paddock on her own, and in her box at night, for those of you how don't know she is just recovered from strangles and for 2 more weeks she has to stay there. however she is fence walking for the second she goes out she has plenty of hay and water with some grass. i wanted to know is there anyway of stopping her doing it as

1 it isn't foing the paddock any good

and

2 i can't she it doing her legs any good going up and down up and down.

nothing i give her calms her down she can see other horses however due to the seriousness of her condition she can't touch them. i tried snack balls, treats, playing with her allsorts. i don't know what i can do to stop her, i've had to box her for the time being but thats not what i really want to do.

any advice really appricated

My mare did this when I first got her, when she had settled in she stopped it. Very occasionally if her routine changes as in she is late getting brought in or feeding she will do it.
You will probably find that as soon as yours is back into her usual routine and can be with her friends she will settle back down.

That must be so hard for her, bless her. I guess isolation for any horse must be torture. Does she actually have to go out? I was wondering if you could beg, borrow or steal a stable mirror and let her stay in with it, then you just walk her in hand in her isolation paddock for half an hour a couple of times a day so she thinks she's got company 24/7? Or have you spoken to the vets about some low level sedation? Not sure that would work in the field but it might give her some respite from her relentless anxiety poor mite x

I'd be concerned that she is allowed out?? Strangles is an airborn disease.

However if you want a mirror i have one that you can have, i'm in essex.

its not airborn unless they have a cough which she didn't also friday and the 30days is up and she's gonna be tested to check she hasn't got it any more,

she doesn't have to go out and hasn't been out since sunday i just prefer them out as she's been in for 5 weeks out of the 7 i've had her
