so... we're looking to buy a falling down house with 18 acres- currently wheat. we're in the process of working out our renovation budget and i want to include fencing costs...

so.. say we fence off 12 acres into 1 acre paddocks (is that a good way to do it?...). ideally post and rail type fencing - anything sturdy but cheap considered...

how much do you reckon it'll cost? go on, guess if you dont know... i don't even have any idea at all...

hundreds? thousands? tens of thousands? hundreds of thousands? help!!!

baileys on ice if you name a price...

mmmmm just for the baileys on ice...

I have been quoted 2450 + VAT for a 20 x 40 arena with gate so x that by 24 is £68,000 ish.

O.k that sounds super steep so maybe not!

Do I still get a baileys?????

I don't know if thats how its worked out though. I was speaking to someone today (in the hope of some inspiration to get mine done cheaper!) and he said that he had a 55m piece of land fenced which cost just over £800!!!

Well if you do it yourself (You'll be either very fit by the end or very knackered)

We've just been doing some fencing and for 2 rails with round posts it cost £3.60 for a 3.4m rail and 1.90 for a round post which is put in every 1.7m - to do 30m it cost us £63.36 in rails and £33.52 in posts - so around £100 for 30m... An acre is 64m/64m so that would be £800 to fence first acre and then obviously some of the paddocks will be joined so you'd be able to deduct £200 for an adjoining side (if that makes sense?)
Is that as clear as mud?

How about just fencing the outside bits and using electric fencing for making the paddocks when you need them. We did our fencing ourselves and you can get the posts and rails from agricultural shops for not that much. Its hard work but great sense of achievement at end.

Thousands.

When I fenced 3 acres 6 years ago it was around £7 per metre. When I enquired on post & rail fencing last year, wood was £12 per metre.

My neighbour fenced her 3 acre field 2 years ago and paid near on £9k which was almost double what I paid 4 years before. That did include all gates & internal paddocks though.

Fence the outside and then divi up with portable elec or mains elec and half rounds and elec tape or rope. Much cheaper and they won't chew or rub their bums on it!

Right, if you measure where you want them fences and how long they are, you will get a rough idea on the amount of fencing you need.
Post and rail will set you off one way or another around £8 - £10
Post, sheep wire and rail or tape on top - around £5-£7
Post, horse wire and rail on top - £11-£13

prices are per metre, to give you an example of how much you need, I am about to fence 14 acres grassland into various sized paddocks, I will need in the region of 2500m of fencing...

Haven't got a clue but I wouldn't fence the whole thing in acre paddocks. Not just the cost issue but its really nice to have the flexibilty to have larger turnout areas and a bit of space of your own that you can go for a gallop at some stage etc. Fencing the outside and then electric fencing the paddocks makes more sense to me

ETS sorry just noticed you said you were fencing off 12 or the 18. Still same comment applies though!!!!

We re fenced half of a 3 acre paddock last year with thick round posts and 2 rails and it came to about £3K. This included moving some gate posts though and ripping out all the old wire and stuff.

I don't know what the existing fencing is like but you could fence 3 metres inside the boundary all round and give yourself a 'track' to ride round the outside. Very useful if you can't stretch to a manege and want to exercise in safety off road or pressed for time.

I wouldn't split it into little paddocks TBH, I'd just use electric and live with it for a while first. If you are re seeding it will be some time before you can really use it for grazing horses and for the first year at least, sheep can help compact the new turf, their small feet also help the grass to 'tiller' and form a good base.
