okay, I bought this:
http://www.derbyhouse.co.uk/prodshow.asp?id=5380&cat=190&scats=190

except it's the standard one (no LCD display) but the actual unit is the same. As you can see, attatching it to the fence is via ONE wire...

It came with no instructions (brand new!) and we're baffled.

I've set it up similar to the picture but nothing... it doesnt work! on the box it just says "remember you don't need a circuit to make the fence work".

anyone have one and can tell me how to make it work? I'm trying it with the internal D batteries to start with, so ideas on that and then on the leisure battery would be welcome. Even my dad (who's a farmer) can't work it!!!

Surely you need a circuit to make any fence work? My fence has two strands and with my old unit you made a complete circuit!

There'll be cake and cocoa for anyone who can help!

They're who I bought it off.... and who sent it with no instructions. OH been trying to call them this last week with no joy.

the earth spike is right in the ground. I switched it on and tried the fence tester... nothing, so put my hand on it. Definately wasn't working

I bought one of these and had exactly the same problem!! Phoned the manafacturer who couldn't shed any light either and got a refund.
Doesn't help you at all, but at least may make you feel less stupid!

I can only think that the batteries are dead or something insde is loose...have you tried it on a leisure battery yet? Is it on an earth stake?

I wouldnt have a clue how to attach it to a leisure battery. the D batteries were brand new.

I've currently got it rigged up in my back garden, we go out have a play with it, come in, scratch our heads, have a cuppa, and try again...

I'm tempted to do the same. Problem is I really need the unit! (well, A unit!) because the ponies are running free on field owner's lawn.... and I promised them I'd fence it off... last week

and I darent admit I can't work the fence unit.

Out of interest did you buy another of a different make? was it any better?

How bizarre...does it not have any other wire's to attach to a battery?
I'd swap it for a more user friendly one if you can...most are really straightforward...even I can use them!

its probably one of those annoyingly simple things.

i set up my electric (in the dark...) just before christmas. connected battery to energiser then to fence.

spent a good 40 mins scratching my head thinkingWHY is it not working.

had it clipped onto the battery fine.... oh no - i had not taken the plastic + / - covers off of the battery terminals ! what a div!

hope you get it sorted. so frustrating when things just dont work / assemble themselves for you

What leads, colour and how many did you get supplied with this, or were attached? You may need one of the leads to attach by the crocodile clip to the earth post - have you got this?

Also check there's not a rocker switch underneath to put on or off?

Hope this helps.

agree with AMP, is the earth wire connected to the unit one end and the earth post the other. Is there an indicator light to show whether the power is on. TBH the earth lead sounds the most likely problem
