Anyone have any recommendations for Shetland proof fencing? Electric doesn't work, he climbs through 5 lines of it without feeling a thing - and it's hooked up to the mains! Was thinking either post & rail or that tornado wire, or both, but can't be totally permanent as it's not our land so limits options a bit.

Some piccies of out new addition:
Being led around by my daughter
Them hanging out in his "stable"

We used post & rail but used the posts with the spikes on the end so we didnt need to concrete the in them when we left we just filled the holes with soil again!

:) I sympathise with your predicament. I don't know what Tornado wire is (off to Google that shortly then) Metal sheep hurdles? A round pen? Both are mobile.

My escape artists are kept behind stockwire but I appreciate that isn't an option for you - have you approached the landowners about the possibility of erecting more permanent fencing?

Very very cute photos :-)))) ahhhhh!

Neither of the options you mention are very cheap as temporary fencing, only electric fits that bill.

Tornado mesh is normally done on a high tensile basis which means it is stretched very taut by machine. Otherwise not ideal as would be a bit too baggy. Hi tensile would mean getting a contractor in as they have the machine to tension it.

Post and rail would be lovely but it's fairly permanent unless you have the sort of soil that would support the approach of the previous poster. And not cheap, but that depends on the area!

You could use tornado type mesh and electrify it to make up for the fact it isnt high tensioned (as you already have the electric hook up). Thats probably the way that I would go.

Or would the farmer really not want it fenced if you paid for it and it was left behind if you went? Most would bite your hand off? Or is it a bigger piece of land and you would only be dividing off part which they dont want to be left with?

Edited to add link to pic of Tornado fencing (we have it, high tensile, great stuff!)

Sheep hurdles work well. The metal 4ft high x 6ft+ long ones.

I had 2 paddocks that we kept little people in, with these all round the boundary or each.
Not cheap for short term, but they are all still going now - and we put them in in the early 80's, just needing to replace the odd fence post.

We put half round posts in & fitted the hurdles up to them - inlerlocking each hurdle as they have a ring or loop to hook them together on 1 end at top & bottom. Then lash the hurdle to the wooden posts. Nice & secure :)

We put electric fence holders on the top of the posts to stop lodgers/show liveries from leaning in & playing over the fence.
