My son really wants ferrets. We are going to see some at a ferret rescue place on wednesday.

Any have experience with them, I have found out the basics but would like to know your experiences.

My cousins always had working ferrets.I was always told that you have to get the girl ferret "done" as it may lead to health problems or let her have a litter (if that's the right word). But if you get them from a rescue place they may have already been seen to.I quite fancy a ferret.

Don't make them angry, they have a bloody good nip and don't let go! I know someone who had working ferrets so don't know anything about pet ones. They can be quite smelly that's one thing I remember!

I love ferrets! They are funny as anything if you give them plenty to do. They like a good large secure cage with a few levels to climb on and they like things to play with like tubes and boxes. They are clean animals in as much as they will always go to the loo in one place but THEY STINK. The corner where they go needs cleaning out every day if you want them to remain reasonably fragrant but they still pong. You can bath them and they don't mind a swim and a scrubbing if they get used to it while they're young. They need lots of handling to keep them tame and trustworthy and you really don't want to get bitten by one because it bloody hurts!

You are right about female ferrets - they have an odd breeding pattern where once they come into season they continue to cycle until they are mated. If they are not mated then they can become very anaemic or develop a serious womb condition called pyometra.
It means if you get a female you have 4 options. 1. let her have lots of babies! 2. also get a vasectomised male 3. have a delvosterone injection before she comes into season to try to prevent her coming in or 4. get her speyed!
Males tend to be less smelly after they've been castrated too.

Me, me I have two, think there are some photos of them in my webshots (click on profile). I adore mine. One thing though if you are going to keep them inside get females, my boys are neutered but I still can't keep them inside they smell too much apparently the males do smell more. Love them to bits though they make me laugh untill I cry. How old is your son? Wouldn't suggest you get them if he is quite young.

Rich is 14, he is used to handling his friends ferrets.

I have an old aviary under the overhang in the stable yard, It is fully secure with a concrete floor. He wants to put a small sleeping box in there and lots of platforms, tubes and hammocks. It is big enough for him to go inside to handle them whilst he is getting to nknow them. The rescue place have a couple of neutered pairs that I can have for a donation to cover their neutering costs.

I only want two though. He wants to call them Tornado and Hurricane.

That sounds ideal. I hope you all enjoy them as they are right clowns. They remind me of kittens when they play, really enthusiastic but a bit uncoordinated.

They make wonderful pets if you can spend the time to keep them tame - they love to play and ours liked things like ping-pong balls and ramps/different levels. We had one that had babies and i hated feeding them because all these furry fingers with teeth used to swarm up the wire netting while I was trying to open the cage door!

Oh no, well if it makes you feel any better both of mine have had many escapes and I have always found them, luckily they tend to go straight up to the first human, they are such friendly boys. Hope they find their ferret.

Just been to the ferret rescue and have chosen a 2 year old albino castrated hob and a 1 year old polecat gill who has been with a vasectomised male. Both very friendly (especially the male) and well handled. Going to pick them up next Monday.

Aaah great my albino male is the most soppy thing ever, he loves cuddles and kisses and falling asleep on my lap! Unlike his 'brother' who is a complete hooligan and doesn't keep still for a minute!
Definately try post some piccies
