i was just wondering where locally (in gloucestershire) are there reliable people/shops that sell ferrets?

i was just curious, as i really want a ferret, and if i can buy one where the best etc etc places to buy one would be!

all help would be appreciated!

also which would you have?

a male or female- because i heard females are less smelly?

Our yard has two ferrers one male one female, the both smell. Beware Ferrets are not the best pets. My YO is a very animal person, the better with animals than peple type and there a fair bit of work for her.

Ferrets are great pets if you handle them from young, my boyfriend has had them and they've been fine because they've been handled.
He was given one once though and that was a bit on the sharp side! - I wouldn't touch it!

And Yes - They STINK!

Don't you have to keep a 'gelded' male to mate with the female else the female becomes ill ? I'm sure I've heard males are better pets and less likely to nip.

There's always loads in our local free ads

Tell you what if you want a nice small-ish furry pet get rats, I have been keeping pet rats for a few years now and they are adorable. You do need to get at least two as they love company and if you get boys they are really big and squishy and love cuddles!

here are the two I have at the moment, Brandy and Guinness

Dont get ferrets, at work we breed them. They are all like little devils and stink! The babys are allways trying to escape and untill tamed quite agressive. The rats their are my friends... The farrets also seem to get brain damage easily!

I think they are lovely, and they make the coolest pets!

We've got two male ferrets, Mark and Spencer, and they do stink. We plan to get them neutered once they reach 6 months, which is November. Apparently, they don't smell quite so bad once neutered. We bath them once a week which helps a lot with the smell. Females do need to mate when in season or they get overloaded with hormones and get very ill. You can either use a vasectomised male, or she can have an injection from the vet. You would be better off getting 2 rather than 1 as they are sociable and need company.

Ferrets only stink badly when they are kept badly and they make great pets (Love rats too but ferrets live longer)
There is a Ferret Rescue in Broadway and ferret shows are held regularly in the midlands.

We have 2 female ferrets, (recently lost 3 others due to old age

).

They make great pets if doctored (males and females) and handled well whilst young.

They need more attention than say rats, rabbits etc as they will go off their little trolleys if they don't get let out to create mayhem at least once per day

Ours have a good sized indoor cage with different levels, tubes, a comfy cat bed (with pillow case to snuggle up in) a hammock and a litter tray, but still need the mental stimulation of getting out and into everything they can!

If cleaned out daily and their bedding changed twice a week there is hardly any odour (trust me I have a very sensitive nose). Ours are bathed if they manage to soil themselves but it is really not good for their skin to be bathed too much.

They have us in stitches, we have a menagerie here and I've owned very many different types of pets but "carpet sharks" really seem to have a wicked sense of humor lol. Check out youtube for "weasel war dance" *g* Just never ever show them naked toes, no matter how well mannered they are they all find toes irresistible!!

When undoctored female ferrets come into season in the spring their "bits" swell up and won't go back to normal until they have mated. If left in this condition They can develop problems that can lead to death, hence the need for a vascectomised (sp?) hob (male ferret). By having your females doctored you avoid this problem.

One other consideration is that ferrets are members of the mustelid family and like their relative the skunk can and will release a foul stench if scared.

Our vet removes the scent glands at the same time as neutering so they can't do this

I really didn't want our ferrets at first (over 10 years ago) my exhusband bought them for my son, but now I love and enjoy them, even if they sometimes get so excited they forget to use the litter tray........

BTW really cute rats

We had them too when my kids were small, much nicer pets than hamsters!

We had two polecats and we got them as youngsters from a rescue centre. They were the best pets ever! Yes they stink.....hence ours lived outside in the shed. They were better after having the snip but they do still smell.

We used to carry ours around and take them for walks in the woods on leads.

They never bit anyone but my dad

Excellent pets and i really miss ours.
