Ok - following on from my previous posts - I realise that I have missed the boat for the weed spraying - so am going to have the fields topped..... but my question is ? is it ok to seed and fertilize now or just fertilize and perhaps seed August/early Sept?

I will be having the fields sprayed for weeds in the Autumn..... Sept time..

Any help and advice appreciated....

I wouldn't reseed yet, you can fert it if its going to rain. If you want to really knock docks and buttercups and the more persistant weeds spray them early spring when they're just growing back you will have a better success rate.

I contacted www.meadowmania.co.uk as I am also going to re-seed my field. They advised me to broadcast the seed at the end of August. They do a 'renovation' mix, and also a new field mix if you were going to plough and start a field ley from scratch.

The last week of Aug is, so they say, the best time to sow seeds.

Hi

As a farmer and haylage grower I agree that the best time to seed is late august/early sept. You need to get it established before winter so that you get a nice stand of grass in the spring. Re seeding now is risky as you need regular rain for the grass to get going and rain is something I definitely don't want at the mo!

Fertilising and spraying now will be a waste of money as you will not get the benefit from it. Spray and fert in April. The cost if the stuff you need to get it right. The best spray is Forefront and it will kill thistles, nettles, docks and ragowort though not sure about butercups as they are a pain to kill as you have to speay them well before they flower

Thanks Mark... based on the advice I have been give here I have decided to re seed August/Sept and then wait until April next year to spray and fertilise...... just have to supplement their feed over the summer....

Thanks for all your advice.....
