Hi guys,

Just wondering what was the best kind of fertilizer to use on grazing land? I have scoured the internet but cant find anything useful about what to use, only why you should do it. We moved to a new yard through winter and the grazing is looking a little sparse now so we're resting the 2 poorest fields and fertilizing them in the hope we can get some decent grass back. Any suggestions appreciated :D

You basically want one that is relatively low Nitrogen, as that is the stuff that makes plenty of leaf and not a lot of root, I think it is Phosphorus that helps with the root structure but very happy to be corrected on that one. There is a product called Top Paddock that you will find via Google, or if you have an agric merchants nearby like Mole Valley or CWG they will be able to advise I am sure and will stock something in small enough quantities for the average horse acreage, rather than 600kg bags!

It depends really, ideally you would do a soil test, maybe give you some idea of why they are so poor fields, if you dont want to spend loads on test etc then as said above, go for a quite low N % fert. When applying you do it or someone does it for you, have a check with the weather forecast, see if you cant spread it with a chance of some rain/shower a day or 2 later, theres nothing worse than chucking it down and then it sitting there for a week or 2 because of a dry spell!!!

I went to our local agricultural suppliers and got some there.....I think it was called 'From Root to Tip 16:16' or something.....I think it is for any kind of 'domestic' plant.....grass included!

Ace! Thanks guys. The grazing in 2 of the fields isn't too bad, i think it's just a bit sparse as it was overgrazed a bit before we moved on.
