Been pondering boots - the standard set-up for SJ seems to be open-fronted tendon boots in front and fetlock boots behind. I'm just wondering why?

Specifically, why open fronted, surely this leaves the front of the legs prone to bangs/knocks from poles?

Also, what benefits do fetlock boots have over brushing boots?

Sorry for all the questions, in one of those moods

open front means that if the horse knocks a pole it realises it has and 'hopefully' wont do it again - with closed fronted they are less likely to notice

As Helena said, open fronted boots means that a horse can feel the poles when it knocks them and the same applies to fetlock boots.
