Pony was running a fever of 40.5 degrees at 3:30pm. By 4pm had received dose no.1 and was pottering about instead of lying on her side feeling terrible. I’m now at work, finishing at 10pm. The dose will run out at midnight said the vet. I have paste to give another dose if needed. The internet says it lasts 12+ hours though for reducing fevers in horses so…?

Given how sick she was, would you:
- Go up at 10pm then again at 12 and monitor her temp for a few hours?
-Just go up at 12 then stay for a while?
- Go up at, say, 1am to see if the temp has risen again?

I’m thinking option 1 but I’m the paranoid sort and she kind of scared me earlier! Vet says virus. Pony is 15min away.

I would check at 10pm and again at 12 to check the temperature. I had the same with my horse back in the Summer and his temp was fine so he didn’t need more until the morning.

Thank you!

Can I ask… did your horse need any additional doses at all? Did any other horse in the vicinity get as sick? How long did it take him to recover?

In 40 years of ponies and 20 keeping multiples, you’d never believe it but this is my first virus! I did a stupid thing at the weekend and commented out loud that I haven’t had a vet bill in a while…

He had bute twice a day for 2 days, then once a day for a further 3 days. He was very suddenly off colour and the fever came on quickly after that. Once it dropped after the initial treatment it didn’t come back up again. About 5 days later he got the snots for a couple of days and it took about 3 weeks for him to stop coughing (exercise induced, he didn’t cough at rest at all)
His field buddy didn’t catch it and I don’t honestly know how he caught it really!

Have pm
You xx but I would check at 10 to see
How temp
Is doing and how she is
In hersellf shoudlnt really be spiking if anything should be coming down with the meds
, and then see how she is again at
Midnight x

Thank you so much!

I literally went for a hack on a seemingly normal pony, she came home like normal, refused her after ride treat, wandered off to stand still and kept tilting her head. I was scrolling to ‘vet’ on my phone at the refusal of the treat… then she went down just after they answered and was flat on the floor having not got up since by the time they arrived. I’ll look out for a cough etc - that’s useful to know.

I’ve got 9 others… hoping no one else gets this bad!

Well the night went well, although she was subdued and cuddly. Morning came and by 9:30am she had a temp of 38.5 so I gave her a dose of the paste. She’s only interested in grass and is a little confused at being separated from her buddy. I don’t trust buddy not to be annoying though, despite clearly being exposed already. So I want her bright and happy before they go back in together.

Bloods will come back later today apparently.
