Our lovely pony has turned into a demon in the past few weeks. He lives out 24/7 has unsoaked hay as not much grass. Light chaff/Saracens shape up., brewer yeast acv. 2 months ago stared him on micronised linseed. 1 month ago equine America glucosamine, msm, turmeric supplement. He has a treat ball once a day with a handful of baileys fibre cubes. Odd carrot daily. He was v hungry so rang Bailey for advice and they suggested fibre beet. It has alfalfa and oats in it. He looks amazing but acts as though he totally wired under the Saddle and being v obnoxious- everything we have achieved has diminished!
has anyone else had a similar experience either with what he is fed or the time of year? We purchased him 6 months ago - he has sweet itch so is the sensitive type . He is rugged and clipped. Any thoughts/ experiences of similar welcome

Why was he very hungry, if he needed more to eat the obvious thing would be to increase the hay, if he doesn't eat it all and is looking well then he is not hungry just greedy like most ponies.

The fibre beet contains alfalfa which is probably providing far too much energy for what I assume is a child's pony, cut it out, if he needs more to eat them give him hay and avoid alfalfa in the future as he probably cannot cope with it.

If he really needs a bit more feed then fast fibre would be far more suitable for him but of course a Baileys rep is unlikely to suggest that, I am shocked that they suggested fibre beet when speedibeet would have been a more sensible option, and still might be.

Thank you !! We stopped fibre beet today and increased his hay. Think lack of grass - hence starting him on hay then rang baileys when he was was dropping weight and lacking condition. hope within week eliminating fibre beet will be back to his lovely self.

Some can react very badly to alfalfa so yes I would definitely stop it, feed unmolassed beet if you want something similar but extra forage is always the best place to start these things.

Sometimes what people look at and say is a "lack of condition" can actually be a protein deficiency- especially the big belly with a ribby/bony look up top. If alfalfa doesn't work you can try speedi-beet for a less heating source of protein!

Yep - I started giving my lot fibre beet a few weeks ago, and my dear boy lost the plot for a few days! I hastily went out and bought speedi-beet! He's now behaving normally again!
