Hi has anyone had any experience with fibres on there outdoor arena? I want to know how likely it would be that the fibres might blow away in the wind? thanks

if you mean the stuff that looks like shredded carpet, yes it all blows down one end of the school, it also blocks the manege harrows so it a nightmare to spread it back out again. my experience of it means i would never put it down as a surface

I have had my silica sand school topped with shredded carpet in the last few weeks and have been very pleased with it - doesn't freeze, doesn't collect puddles, hasn't blown around at all despite high winds and hasn't needed any levelling at all despite people jumping/riding/ lunging on it daily.

Two other yards in the area have had it down for almost 2 years and still very happy with it :)

I've heard that too, that it's a nightmare to manage. Feels nice to ride on but it tends to blow about if your school isn't in a sheltered area.

Have you thought about using plastic granules? We have 2 schools, one with granules and sand mixed anf the other with just granules... both are very easy to manage and most importantly, neither have frozen at all over winter, even down to -8 they were still perfect to ride on...

It gives a medium to firm springy ride...

This is the sand and granule school... the sand is slowly starting to mix in now :)

I've got Flexiride which is 1" pieces of shredded carpet not just the loose fibres. I'm really pleased with it so far, it hasn't blown about even in the really high winds a couple of weeks ago and it hasn't frozen. I was really worried about the wind before it arrived but as the pieces are similar to chunks of rubber rather than loose fibres it isn't light enough to get blown about.

I have flexiride too - it hasnt blown about, doesnt freeze and is nice and soft to ride on but very difficult to spread level!

EQUISCENE - which leveller do you use on your Flexiride? They say to use chain harrows but I'm wondering if the one with times and rollers would be better.

Dont use chain harrows - it just drags it around on mine (flexiride on top of silica sand). To be honest it doesnt need much maintenance now it is spread and I just occasionally spend 1/2 hour levelling it by hand/rake. Read somewhere on here that it is better rolled but I want to get it as even as possible before rolling it flat as a cricket pitch!

I have had sand and clopf down for 18 months in an incredidly windy area with no problems but I think the type of sand you have might make a difference. My sand is quite large granules, unsuitable really on its own for a school, but oddly enough I think that keeps the fibre in place and the whole thing works really well.

Overall I find the school needs less watering as the fibre retains water, it is less likely to freeze but if there is snow the fibre makes the snow ball up in the shod feet a lot faster than it otherwise would.
