Hi,

We have a TB who is only 8 years old and has great potential as a show jumper which is the reason i brought her - However recently after jumping she has suffered sever stifness and constantly lame. After a numer of back treaments etc the vet recommened we had her x rayed, which we did and she has SEVERE arthritius is both hocks and is now unable to jump again without causing her pain. She is sound on a daily basis and is able to be ridden just not jumped to a competitive standard that i purchased her for. I love her dearly and would love to find her a lovely new home for grazing and to maybe be a field companion so she can enjoy her days.

Does anyone know of anyone that is looking for a field companion, or where i could best advertise or find such a place?

Many thanks

Cheryl

THANK YOU

if she is sane as a light hack, i would try to find her a home with that job.
otherwise, to be brutally honest it is very very difficult to find good permanent homes as companions. horses cost money, time and effort to keep, and at any moment might cost a lot more in vet's bills. there are lovely retirement homes where you pay a certain amount per week for field keep, this is really the most responsible thing to do, otherwise i'm afraid that if she was mine and i didn't want to keep her till the end of her days i would have her pts, then there is no danger of her being abused, e.g. of someone buying her cheaply, dosing her up to make her sound, and selling her to make a quick buck (i know of someone who did this fwiw, poor horse, poor new owner). she might end up at a horse sales and then heaven knows what might happen... any responsible owner's worst nightmare.
very best of luck.

Could she be any use as a brood mare, or would the extra weight carrying cause issues to her? I really feel for you, but if she were mine I would try and put her out on loan as a "light hack" or seriously consider pts as she has probably another 12 years as a "companion" and there are so many unwanted, unloved sound horses out there I would not want her to be unloved and un cared for. Its a really really heart breaking time for you, and its easy for us to sit here and advise you as we are not in it. Good luck i really hope you have the strength and love of her to do whats right for both of you - and I have no idea what that will be.
