Hi everyone,

My mare is a nightmare to catch so I am turning her out in a headcollar which makes it much easier to catch her. But I want to buy a proper field headcollar for saftey. Has anyone used the Horseware field safe headcollar or the LeMieux Breakaway Headcollar?? or has any other recommendations ?

Thanks x

I use the IV horse one (has velcro nose and headpiece so will come off easily but wouldn't lead a horse down the road in it either then). and a libbys one, but I trust that one less to come off in an emergency so it only gets used if the other one is drying.

I use a leather head collar, as mine used to remove the field safety ones himself. Leather will snap under too much pressure, so is a good option.

I use a horsewear field safe one. They run big but do the job. I also use a leather one. The two geldings were playing this morning and one pulled the leather headcollar off the other one, so no need to worry about it not coming off in an emergency.

I have the horseware one and like it- I can lead in it too because it doesn't give way too easily. The only thing is my sensitive one gets little rubs on the side of his nose from the metal rings, but this could be because it's a bit too big for him, as it's not a problem with my other one. I used to have one with rubber rings as break points (can't remember what make) but it was useless- horse rubbed head on leg and it snapped, and could never replace the rings!

aww see F's a good boy, but he also doesn't have any decent playments these days or I might have had to think of something else. I wanted to avoid leather if poss as in general he does tend to be rubbed by it.

I would say leather too. I've got a customer who has show ponies prone to robust play and instead of using leather headcollars she gets me to replace the head piece of standard nylon ones with leather - she finds the stand up better to horse play and the elements but still offer the safety benefits of all leather.

Cheap leather headcollar here, got ratty quickly through wear which meant it was more likely to break under strain. Did try your standard velcro type and plastic ring type field headcollars, but both types were swiftly figured out and removed by the offender!
