'Field Maintenance' jobs...

I have quite a lot of different 'plants' growing in my field (i have pulled all ragwort out though!) O/H was initially just going to hire a strimmer but now he's thinking about hiring a tractor with something on the back of it (can't remember the name)

to cut the hedges all the way round the field. Does anyone have any idea of a rough cost?

(we're in Nottinghamshire btw!)

Not sure youy'd hire a hedgecutter very easily..they take a bit of skill to operate and a fair sized tractor. Much easier to get a contractor to come and do it (or local farmer). yell.com or local farm ad magazine's the best place to look

yes we know a fairly local place that hires them out! O/H is very use to them hence he offered to hire one! I wouldn't let him near one if he hadn't a clue what to do!

There is a place at Barnby Moor that does flail hedge cutting - they advertise on a board outside, on the right hand side after the pub and Manor House.

We have a man called Richard Gibbons from Wheatley, or Lewis Cobb from Clarborough does it. Either would be cheaper than hireing a flail for back of tractor, plus Iam told there is skill involved in hedge cutting with a flail.

my dad charges bout £35 per hour for paddock work as it needs to cover diesel and time etc we are in northampton if that gives u a rough guide of farmer/contractor costs

Do not flail your hedges now! It is totally the wrong time of year for them, and you risk breaking the law if you disturb any nesting birds. Really, if you want your hedge to remain healthy, you need to do works to them over the winter, October to about Feb. You aren't going to kill them doing them now, but it really isn't a very good time of year to do them.

I would advise leave it too the experts!! I think we pay around £40 for ours doing and we have 6 acres. We have Richard cos he is my Dads friend but I know alot of people who have Lewis and are equally pleased.
