Is there any way other than seperating horses, you can get them to stop ripping rugs? These two have been otogether for 7 months. This last month hes started pulling on the tail flap of my mares rugs, and ripping them along the seams so they hang round her back legs. Its not something that can be mended either. I think hes started doing it as shes finally let him close enough to her to do it, as shes quite a bossy mare that usually doesnt let a horse anywhere near her bum!! Hes ripped two fly rugs (she has sweet itch so hate her being out naked :() my lightweight and my medium weight. Luckily my medium weight had a detatchable tail flap so i got away with that one. Im so close to separting them but they love each other very much and i dont want to have to do that. But in all this rain my mare is shivering and freezing to touch!!! Helpp!!!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr how annoying!!!!!!! One of ours destroyed his own rugs every few hours last yr, its a nightmare! Sorry can't think of anything to help you other than tell your mare to tell him off!!

xx

haha i wish she would!! its costing me a fortune to replace all the rugs. and i darent put anymore on her! Shes always a cowbag with other horses, and the one she isnt is a rug wrecker!! Sods law lol!!

Bloomin horse. There should be something that tastes so gross it would really put him off surely?

Not that i want to risk it on another rug.... GRRR!!!

We have two geldings that play at stallions and hang off each other's rug straps etc until they break. We solved the problem by putting grazing muzzles on them so that the novelty wore off when they could only poke each other! After a few months they got out of the habit and we were able to take them off again. I thought of cribbox etc, but thought that I'd end up with it all over me when taking rugs on and off..

Grazing muzzle is a great idea but think the other horses owner may kill me for that :/ i might seperate their field so theyre still close but not that close. But then dont know if mare would be happier cold and with her boyfriend or warm and with boyfriend behind electric fencing!?!?

i would put no bite on her rugs the smell is enough to stop them and if they get it on their tongue its disgusting and it takes ages to go - i would know i got it in my mouth when spraying it - i wouldnt recommend it lolll good luck!

I know exactly how you feel. One of mine trashes my tbs rugs constantly! I'v lost track over the years how many new rugs I'v bought/repaired, all to be ripped again within a few hours!! I can't separate them either! I'v tried everything, cribox and the one designed for rugs (can't remember its name) but when it rained a bit leaked down my tbs neck an brought him up in a rash. Jeyes fluid watered down is meant to be good also, although not tried it on my boy as he's so sensitive! I'v known people rub chilli oil onto rugs too :)

I had this problem last year & cribbox & crib stop did nothing!! But it was just a phase that they came through.. but boys are a nightmare..always playing & rug ripping.. the only thing is to get an 1800d rug ballistic coating...the only thing that worked with mine. The Axiom ones on Ebay are fab!!

Mines the one doing the ripping...not great on a livery yard. He's been separated into his own borstal enclosure for the last year. However rugs are mysteriously still breaking and it's not been him! There was a break out earlier this week, his bit has more grass so the others decided to join him. No rugs were further damaged and its been agreed he can have a pal over for some of the time! The Pal is the dominant male so I'm hoping he get puts in his place if he tries vandalising rugs again.

Not very helpful sorry.
