Field mats in the garden?

Sure others have this problem but wondered if my idea would work.

So big long garden. 4 active staffords and where they jump off the patio onto the lawn is just a mud bath. Moved pots around to make them come off different bits but now have 1 large mud patch ..

Has anyone tried field mats? And would my lawn be better off come the summer?

we just blocked paved our garden....before that it was halve blocked paved and a small fence blocking off the grass
