I am renting a lovely field which is perfect, however, the owner assured me he was going to have field shelters done before the winter, that was at the beggining of August, a week later the digger was in to dig holes for the uprights (FO had a builder in to build his own) and then it all went quiet. I saw the FO about 2 weeks ago (he goes away alot) and he told me that the builder had quoted him £1000 for the shelter which was going to be just the upright posts and a roof, no sides. So FO asked if I could have a look online to see if there was any that I liked so I thought yay, lets get surfin!! Found a lovely one, 24ft x 10ft for £1600 inc delivery which I thought was quite good. Emailed this to FO and he said that it was far too much money and isn't prepared to spend that much.

So I am going to see if I can find a way of building one on a budget, anyone have any ideas?? Winter is just around the corner and I need this shelter ASAP :(

Can't you buy one? One of those portable ones?
I wouldn't expect a field owner to pay/erect a shelter for me if there wasn't already one.

Have you contacted an agricultural builder yourself for a quote?

I would imagine that it's the materials that are making it so expensive - wood is extortionate.

And going halves on the costs also?

FO would like 2 other liveries as well as me, so I can't really buy a shelter for my horse when there are going to be 2 other horses sharing the field. Sorry, I should of mentioned that!

Did he say how much he was willing to spend? I would find out what his budget is and then find something within that. It sounds as though he was happy to get something sorted for your horse but wasn't expecting to spend that much.

Planning permission is the owners problem not the tenent!

It is not difficult to fill in 3 sides with exterior plywood - The sheets are large and there is no need to take the sides fully up to the roof.

One place I grazed at had very interesting shelters, they had no roof but there were three sides that met in the middle - they allowed the horses to stand out of the way of the wind.

A field shelter is not a total necessity - a well fitting leak free cover will keep your horse warm and dry.

This is a drawing of the shelter
