Hi, we own a 5 acre field which I have two horses on. At the beginning of spring I paid to have it rolled and it looked beautiful! Now with all this wet weather it looks like it will need doing again. I don't really want to keep paying someone to do it so thought I could invest in a roller I could put behind the 4x4 but they are really expensive. Just wondered if anyone on here had made one or knew where I could get a cheaper one? I think essentially they are water barrels so if I could find some with centres I could use them. Any ideas?

Probably not helpful. My husband made ours. He bought a ready made tube of metal. The tube was huge and welded a round plate on either end. We put sand in it for weight. This is not terribly helpful if like me you cannot weld! Having made our own I can see why they are so expensive.

I do find though that harrowing alone does a lot to flatten a field. They are a lot cheaper so if you do not have one it could be worth starting one of those.

We bought a small one from our garden centre. I think they supplied them for folk with ride on mowers etc and it works very well. We filled ours with water. It was about £150 from memory. We have 5 acres and it's fine for that but I think it would start to struggle if you have vast amounts of land. It is worth going to farm sales for this sort of stuff and also there are plenty of websites now with equipment for compact tractors which offer gear at reasonable prices. Again they are worth a look.
