What do you put your hay in in the field shelter during the winter? do you have a rack? a bar? haynets or something different?

I don't want to put it out on the floor due to wastage, so looking for a safe alternative for 2 cobs and a pony!

Also does anyone use one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HAY-NET-F...t=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item56516224f3

Tempting but what happens when the bale gets smaller? is there a load of saggy new left behind?

I used a haybar and the cob and pony were a lot less messy and wasteful as a result. A godsend in the winter too

Yeah i was thinking two haybars in each corner - the coloured will share where as the welshie gets a bit funny round feed!!
The shelters going to be big enough for 2.
They are quite expensive so just wondered if they last well, are safe and are worth the £70? :)

I installed a Haybar in the shelter and am really pleased with it. Seems safe if there is enough room for the horse to lie down, move around etc. Far safer than that enormous hair net contraption that was on eBay! How to get a horse's foot through a net without trying I think.

The hay bar survived my demolition derby of a cob, no mean feat! I was really pleased with it as previously he would box walk (with shelter door open!) when munching hay and make such a mess. I would suggest using metal washers between the screw heads and the actual haybar though, had to re-drill one of the holes closest to the top but I think that was due to fatty leaning on it to get the last dregs of hay out!

I wouldn't want a haybar with free horses - the horse couldn't see if another horse was coming to bug it if it had its head in a haybar. I would rather have a hay rack or net where the horse can still see whats going on around him when he is eating. My gelding can be a bit mean to my mare, so I actually have the nets outside under the overhang, so they can be eaten from inside and outside (ie, just outside the door).

I think that big bale net looks absolutely like an accident waiting to happen.

I hang haynets inside and out, I have made my own hay rack in one corner too. Outside I have a home made ring feeder made out of posts and rails(think tiny paddock for a round bale ).
