Field shelters, anyone got any DIY plans for temp shelters?

As per the title really, my 2 have been used to being stabled and since we are moving to somewhere where there is no stables, i was hoping to put up some sort of shelter for them, DIY and not permanent as im renting..has anyone got any plans or pictures of home made ones my OH could follow...just to give them a bit of shelter from rain, if they want it, there is a barn, i could use in emergency situations but it would literally be emergency, so i guess im going to have to start heavier rugging, one of mine is trace clipped with heels, the other youngster has a pretty fine coat, thanks
 
I think your best bet would be to go and have a look at a place that sells shelters and let you OH have a good look at them, then if he's handy enough he can make something similar. Don't forget guttering, an essential to save water and stop the bottom of the shelter going icky with all the damp.

If you can get some big bake straw either round or hesstons delivered then they make a good windbreak.
if the field bondry offers no shelter , eg if its wire fencing then stack them against it or if you have a hedge or wall then make a stack in the mddle of the field. the horses can walk around it to get out of the wind and some of the wet.

In lincolnshire I have seen a lot of people using the giant straw bales, made in a Y shape to provide shelter, the same ensures that what every direction the horses have shelter from the wind.

I have considered doing this for my own horses, but to date have not been able to speak to anyone personally to see how effective it is.

It seems a cheap and temp method and if it does not work, not a lot is lost.
 
Hi nuffield!

How high would you put the straw bales, 2 up? i was thinking would they not take up alot of room an 1 acre?
