Hi chaps

I have a wee 6 yr old mini shetland who is moving from her current location to our new yard.

She has never been to this yard before, and to my knowledge has never been in a stable before. This is the first time I have moved a horse who hasn't lived in a stable before ... how would you chaps go about introducing horse to stable? Gentle encouragement, haynets ... stick her in and get let her get on with it ... Put her in the field instead ... She will have travelled for about 60 mins when she gets to us - would you let her have a moment stretching in the menage, or would this be too much too soon and would just walk her around the barn for a bit?

I should add that this yard is for just 2 horses - the other of which isn't due to arrive until the morning after us, so she will be on her own for overnight.

These 2 horses are strangers - how would you go about introducing them to each other? The other on is Connemara, so quite a bit taller than my mini!

Looking forwards to any advice offered - I will have experienced people with me when we bring mini into the yard, but I feel like I should have background ideas of what to possibly do, what behaviour I might expect from the pony ...

Seems to be silly to still be up at this hour worrying about moving a shetland but I want to try my best to get it right for her ... first time horse owner - does it show?! :roll eyes:

Many thanks peeps
Ems

I think you will need to play it by ear, she may surprise you. Definitely hay net in stable, let her have a look round in there, see how she settles. Be prepared to change your plans and if she's used to being out then consider that to begin. It will be better for her to have another horse around if you want to stable her. Just give her time to settle and keep things calm. Enjoy her and relax x :)

I would also say play it by ear and see how she is but please do NOT use a haynet, if she is not used to being shut in she may go on her backs legs and those little feet can so easily get stuck in a net, with possibly tragic consequences, just put the hay on the floor for now.
