ive been offered a 4 acre field to use for 6 weeks-the fencing is fine and i really need to rest my own fields so am looking for somewhere
there would only be my horses in there and the fence is electric and 2mins from work and my current yard.
the only thing is there is a yearling colt in the next field-he is out with mares and geldings and doesnt appear coltish-would you put your mare next door to him?

I have a field of 4 mares, 8 fillies and 2 yearling colts. The colts are well and truly at the bottom of the pecking order and never behave badly. Yes I would put my mare in an adjoining field to a yearling colt; they rarely have the ability to cover at that age, although there are obviously exceptions to the rule.

It depends on how well fenced off it is. If it is only fenced with electric fencing then no, but its up to you if you risk it. I have just bought a yearling colt who was out with mares and other colts before I had him but I was told that he had tried to cover a mare and he will try to mount anything!!!! which is why he is out with 3 other colts not in my 9 acre field with my mare.
