We live in the flightpath of a regional airport, and every so often a HUGE military plane does training here; it never actually lands but flies over very close, then goes very low over the airport runway, and up again! I can't remember what sort of aircraft it is, but its VERY noisy! Apparently they don't land as it costs them to do so!

We also - in the summer (don't s'pose it'll happen this year sadly) - get the Red Arrows flying right over us. We went for a hack a few years ago, and were literally on the road at the end of the runway for the airport, which is part of a nice little circular ride for us, when the Red Arrows flew in right over the horse's ears!! And they didn't turn a hair, bless 'em!

Sorry OP, yes, low flying can be scary for both horse and rider, especially in a scenario such as you describe!!

They used to be a regular occurrence round my way. As a plane geek, I really miss it! It was so regular the horses didn’t bat an eye lid at them. The local base were pretty good at warning ‘unusual’ aircraft coming through.

Thought of this thread this morning when something very big and very low rumbled across overhead...

Unfortunately the cloud cover meant we couldn't see what it was, but gosh it sounded low!

If it was before 11am and you're in the southern half of the country a typhoon did some fly pasts and the reds did a mini flyby of some of the south/east and over London. Think there were some ww2 planes doing flyovers too, they all seemed to be south too though :(

ETA apparently typhoon did Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Ah! Thank you. Probably the typhoon as we're comparatively close to Edinburgh.

I was very surprised we didn't get a fly past yesterday. They often fly along the Derwent valley and fly over Rolls Royce.
