What could cause a horses hind legs from hock downwards to swell and be hot to touch? I think the horse is slightly lame.

This is a horse on our yard. Around 8yrs. Vet says not Lymphangitis as no pitting when pressure applied. Not been shod recently. Out in paddock that has fairly long stalks of grass but not to give impression horse grazing on lush grass as its not.

I wondered if it was a bacterial skin infection on the legs caused by the wet long grass. Friends horse had same going through contaminated water on a xc water jump with white foamy algae. They've run bloods but nothing obvious showing.

Horse eating, but lost a bit of appetite. Swelling doesn't go down with cold hosing or exercise. Horse been prescribed antibiotics. Vet is at a loss to know what's wrong.

Any ideas?

I have just been reading about horses eating acorns and one of the symptoms is swelling of the legs / loss of appetite. It's a long shot but if he's had access to acorns, could be worth considering?

Mine has this, he had a high temp last Sunday night vet came Monday morning injection of antibiotics and told to give Danilon, bloods taken he was slightly anaemic, all going well temp back to normal then Friday pm hind legs up like balloons. Vet out again Sat, more bloods taken and penicillin injections to go with antibiotics and Danilon. No improvement yet. He is supposed to be having a tooth out next weekend so I need him to be well ?

Thanks everyone. Apparently horse was going to be in trouble if the swelling went into the hocks as it wouldn't be able to move and it would be curtains. All sounds a bit weird to me. Horse's swollen legs have gone down, its now finished the prescribed antibiotics so just waiting to see if they stay down.

Vet originally said it was due to protein in hay as another horse had the same thing that was eating the same hay, but that's better now too.

So today he galloped up the field and did the wall of death on the lunge so I think he is now fine. Vet tested for strangles (?) which was negative but said there was evidence of inflammation but didn’t say where ?‍♀️ main thing is he seems to be recovered.
