Long story short .... horse injured foreleg out in field, no obvious injury but heat and swelling for 10 days, 1/1o lameness. Vet came out and scanned tendons and no issues there so cold hosing, Compagel, bandaging at night and turnout during day. Was getting better and then the skin on the leg got an infection and got very sore due to all the cold hosing, compagel and mud and turnout boots . Vet prescribed flamazine and a steroid cream but no antibiotics and no hosing or wrapping, and basically leave well alone. After a week, apart from all the skin down the back of the leg sloughing off and looking rather sore, the infection looks to have gone and swelling and heat seemed to have gone. Horse is now on turnout in the arena, for about 4 hrs. no lameness so back on board for a short walk and trot around the arena - all good. However, that leg this morning was slightly filled after being overnight but went down once out of stable and walking around. I know some horses regularly 'just' get filled legs from standing in, do you think this is just a case of oedema building up due to the recent injury and its still healing a little. Any advice? Vet doesn't seem worried and said unless actually lame, the exercise is good and to start building up again. just looking for other peoples experiences please...
