After being stables for the day yesterday, my mare developed filled legs (all four, equally). As she sometimes gets filled back legs, and she was sound, I didn think anything of it and turned her out overnight as normal. This morning tho, her hack legs have gone back to normal but her front legs are still filled! I've been cold hosing her, bandaging and walking in hand for he morning but no improvement as yet. The vet said to check her temperature but it's normal, and she is sill sound.

Does anyone have any experience of this and possible causes or cures? Supposed to be competing tomorrow :(

Is she normally in? Was she stabled for longer than usual or out of her usual routine?

Is she in season?

IME, mares tend to be more likely than geldings to get filled legs - no idea why, just one of those things. I used to have a 5 yr old mare whose legs would fill if she stood in more than usual, or out of her routine. No other reason - once she'd got used to being in, they settled down and stopped filling.

If she's sound, happy, well in herself, then I'd carry on - work her and see how she is

If it's unusual for her front legs to fill, it may take some time for them to come back down.

The only other reason I can think of for her legs staying up would be if she's picked up a virus, but if her temperature is normal, then that would seem less likely.

Thanks for the advice. She is normally stabled during the day and her routine hasn't changed in a few months, nothing was different in terms of time spent in the box, exercising or in the field.

She's not in season either, am struggling to think of anything that could be causing this!

Her temperature is still completely normal, might lunge her and see how she is in trot.

Thanks for the advice!
