What would you do? I have a horse who legs fill after a period of time standing in a box. Would you put stable bandages on or leave alone. I've always left alone but a few people on my yard think it's best to bandage.
My horse got kicked once and afterwards his legs would fill when he was in. I banadaged for about 6 months, and then his legs stopped filling and I haven't had a problem since.
Alot of horse on our yard our bandaged at night for one reason or another. I really think it depends on the circumstances. Is the horse turned out at all? And most importantly will there be someone there to remove the bandages during the day?
Another thing to consider with bandages is that horses can become dependant (not sure if thats the right word, it seems a bit extreme) but bandages can actually weaken tendons in the long run.
At present my horse wears magnet boots during the night and is then turned out for a few hours in the morning when the boots have been removed. This system seems to be working for him but as always it just depends on your circumstances.
to be honest it depends on how much they swell. My vet always says leave them if you are not 100% of how much they will swell as you could restrict the blood supply.
Have you looked a feed? I know my own horses legs will fill if I feed him certain feeds then leave him in
I did think about his feed as all of the horses on my yard are fed oats or pellets. There is no other choice on offer. I feed pasture mix and fibregy from dobson and horrell in the evening with supplements as he will not eat them with the oats. I think I will change his feed as it could be the oats causing the problem.
I put leave alone. Loan horses legs fill when she's been standing in, and I don't bandage her. However, she is only in when I want to ride so is out 24/7 really at the mo.
However, when she comes in at night she will get bandaged then to help.
my horse is on box rest at the moment post-surgery so his legs are bandaged, although he is going out for a bit in a tiny paddock in the daytime so i just bandage at night now. normally when he is stabled at night they do fill a bit overnight but i dont bother bandaging. only doing it now coz he needs the support. will stop at some stage so he doesn't get reliant on them.
My horses legs quite often fill slightly when he's in overnight and I just chuck him out in the field and they go down very quickly. Also riding him after he's been in helps to bring down the swelling.
