My friends horse came in from the field today with three very filled legs and one slightly filled leg. The vet said it could be something he ate or an allergy. He had a steroid injection and an antibiotiic injection this morning and tonight his legs although still filled were under half the size they were this morning. Anybody any ideas as the vet isnt really sure what it could be.

Had this exact same thing happen to my boy earlier this week!

We don't know what caused his either...
The options my vet came up included being bitten by something; eaten something; a small nick or cut where bacteria may have gotten in; a mild virus; possibly caused by change of haylage (which he had been on for 5 days with no signs of swelling!)
So basically, he didn't really know! Gave ned injection of anti-inflam, anti-biotic and steroid. The swelling came down quite quickly after injections. Also been cold hosing and gentle hacking to help with swelling.

Hope your friends horse gets better soon.

He's quarter tb, quarter id and the other half is oldenberg!

He is quite a sensitive soul anyway and suffers from sweet itch but he's never had anything like this before. (He's 6 and we bred him so know everything about him!)

Similar thing happened to one of mine last week - I noticed he had one filled hind.
He had been guzzling on some new grass and then standing a lot feeling stuffed, so I moved him on to a bare bigger paddock, and by the next morning it had all gone back to normal!

Could be an infected cut. My TB had a filled off hind last week and kept lifting it up the vet said it was celulitis and gave him some antibiotics, touch wood is back to normal now !!

wouldn't be an infected cut on three legs and part fourth!

Seen this before - was a horse that had access to some new rich grass, and seen it on a horse wiht a viral infeciton but it had raised respiration and was sweating

Ditto here.

Horse came in from field with one large filled hind and very hot to touch, the other less filled but also hot.

Horse had been on new field for 5 days (though not much grass in it) and vet had no idea, could be new grass, allergy, too much protein, lymphan wotsit.

Two injections and some bute and he's right as rain.

Though his legs do fill when stabled.....
