How often do you wash yours?

Was going through some rugs this morning for New Horse & checking fit etc before packing the ones which didnt fit all away.
Lovely livery asked why I was folding up everything & bagging them - well - they are all clean & can be kept for another day.
I also said I pop grotty fillet strings home once a week/fortnight or so if grubby or muck covered - to have a good hot soapy wash & then bring back the next morning again :)

She admitted she hasn't removed her lads fillet string at all this winter  on the 1 main rug he's been wearing most of the time, so I looked across the yard to really look at it & its encrusted with yuk :eek::(

Do you ever clean your fillet strings apart from when a rug goes for wash at odd points (if ever) If not, then why?

All my rugs get washed during the summer ready for the winter but I must admit i don't wash the strings between that time but only because I don't really think about but now you have made me think about it :)

We take them off, if they each have 3 rugs on in the winter no way am I washing 12 fillet strings a week! Have leg straps for New Zealands so no need.

I wash them when they're dirty. End of. But then I'm a little obsessive about the GreyDonk being clean anyway . . . I wash his stable rugs as often as I can - about once a month or so, more often if they get particularly minging and I'll do his fillet strings in between if they need it . . . on some rugs the fillet string sits higher and gets dirtier, so they get washed more often . . . on others he seems to miss them (if you get my drift).

P

I took mine off the stable rugs - they get washed monthly but her tail was always yucky with them on. The turnouts have leg straps so problem solved.

Most of mine have a plastic/silicone type sheath over them so the strings don't get dirty at all and the sheaths don't stay mucky for long. I never wash mine during the winter.

I have the ones in the sort of plastic tube that came with my old Fal rugs - I just use them on whatever rug the horse is wearing. Poo doesn't stick to them ;)

Well, there you go eh? :)
Having had a mare in with supporating sores on her rear due to soggy fillet string chafing, its just something I keep on top of, as am sure you might have foibles too ;):)

Oh dear. Well, not had poo sores from string but I guess I do have some foibles. You're right.

If you get a tube of fish tank piping and slit it down the one side and fit the fillet string through it or a very thin bit if hosepipe the **** will not stick to it as much as the material and also easier to wipe clean or remove wash and replace.

I brush mine off with a scrubby brush or use baler twine. I now have a grey who is naturally the dirtiest b*gg*r ever of course

Mostly, I use the slightly elasticated leg straps, or plastic tube covered strings. Otherwise I swop fillet strings and wash them in a bucket of hot soapy water.

Don't like urine smelling/poo covered stable rugs and turnout rugs that are filthy on the lining. Everything is cleaned regularly.

I change my two horses fillet strings every week. I buy extra Premier equine ones - easy to wash/dry - and they have clean ones ready for their rugs. My two are a mucky pair so couldn't leave them any longer. I have had to remove the tail flap on the rugs my gelding wears as they get disgusting really quickly and aren't so easy to keep clean. He can get a bit stressy.

Cleaned all my mare's fillet strings on her stable rugs tonight, this thread reminded me :P All the turnouts have leg straps used as fillet strings and they get cleaned when necessary. Not a nice job but I can think of worse!

Something I don't really think about! *shame!* i do notice at work fillet strings being gross- I could name the horses there who's are worst so I'm assuming mine must be pretty spotless?!
