What age does a filly become as a mare?

My horse is 3 years old, is she still a filly?!!

(I'm being serious, I really am that thick!!

upto 4 a filly
4 and over a mare IMO

This is the thing, it varies across persons and disciplines, I've always thought 3 as then technically (if we're a bit old school) they're grown ups and working. Then again I got this question wrong in a uni pub quiz where they said 4, something about TB industry I think

Technically a mare is classed as such when it turns 4 and a filly up until then - the same as a stallion is classed as such after turning 4 up until then it's a colt or a horse.

A filly becomes a mare at age 4.
A colt becomes a stallion at 4 also - unless gelded of course!!
