For about the last week my filly has had a scabby face, mainly down the front of her face from below her eyes to her nostrils. Her ears are also quite scabby. What i mean by scabby is small black/grey scabs, thought at first she has had her head in the brambles but she has moved to a new field and there isnt any! and her face has got slightly worse.( also has been worse since having wet weather).
Any ideas what this could be, only seems to be there as the hair is less.
Would be greatful from any help.

Molly has this too, she has rubbed one of the scabs and now has a bald patch the size of a 2p piece, it looks awful! I have been keeping it clean with hibiscrub, then drying it, it gets better, the hair starts to grow and then she rubs it again

My vet is coming anyway next week so I'm going to get him to look at it. We moved to a new yard in September and she started getting them then so agree its in the field.

It's not itchy or dosent seem to be, didnt know if it is best to remove the scabs or leave them to come off themselves? If it was mites would it be all over her face?

Hmmm, stumped, could you post a pic, as sure someone must have had this before.

I'm sure it is always very itchy if they have mites (new pony on yard had them last year, and wanted to rub on anything & everything, gate posts, people, haynet etc... They were mainly round her ears and forelock, you could see them moving if you looked closely, they were greyish in colour).

Is it rainscald? One of mine had it ion her face once and I assumed it was where she stood looking out over the stable door and got dripped on. I picked all the scabby clumps of hair off with Nappy Rash cream (can't remember what it's called), washed and dried it and them stuck a big dry bit of Animalintex to her face using masking tape. It cleared up in about a week. she went out in the field wearing her 'visor' with a note written on it asking walkers (footpath next to field) not to remove it!

I did wonder if it could be rainscald as the hair on her face is alot finer. It only started when the weather turned bad, just never seen it on faces before and the hair isnt coming out in tufts!!

my gelding has also come out in weird face sores this week, they started around his muzzle, like small blisters that burst, it then went grey and healing and another patch broke out further up, this has happened about 4 places this week working its way up, as 1 place heals another starts up. It dosnt seem to itch (well not intensely) He is a real pain to do around his face, I did manage to 'slap' some udder cream on when his attention was diverted (y.o handful of nuts LOL) this seemed to help a little, but any ideas of what it is?? spoke to previous owner, who said he had it before, but wouldnt let her put cream on, it cleared up on its own. I am just hanging out for that now. Sorry to steal your thread!!

Sudocrem,/nappy rash cream

my gelding has the same- black scabs around his nose and up his face. Used sudocrem twice a day and its all gone now but where the scabs were he now has no hair.

Hoping it will grow back but he has hardly any hair on his face anyway .

Got it when it got really wet and muddy - thought it was mudfever on his nose but could be rainscald !
