My 6mo terrier pup is a truly filthy girl :(

She loves water and always jumps in, but that's fine.. Water is normally cleanish unless its a dirty drain or something. .

Our nearest walk is a footpath through 100 acres of SSI bog. The path is raised but either side has areas of wet, liquid mud not water wet.. And she loves jumping in it, more each time, to the point that she submerged her head in it yesterday :(

Its not just one area or I would temporarily put her on the lead.

I don't mind bathing her once a week as she's very good, but not every time...

Please people, any suggestions?

Fiona

When I worked with hounds, we'd shut them up in a loose box with plenty of clean dry straw. The hounds would clean themselves off surprisingly well. One area we hunted was the Somerset Levels with lots of deep muddy ditches. They would be clean again in a couple of hours. Works best when you have a few dogs, so a good excuse for getting more.

Doesn't someone make a 'dog bag' (don't know what they are called)? The dog is put in the bag with head sticking out, then the neck of the bag is drawn up confining the dog and dirt to the bag until both are dry. Can't see that working for a terrier, but thought I would mention it!

Dry rot I never had this problem before because we had smooth coat jrts. Got filthy but easily cleaned with a towel..

Lily has a soft fluffy coat and by god does it hold the dirt :(

I've loads of fleeces cc but it's mainly her tummy, legs and now her head that are the muddiest :(

If hosing her would encourage her not to do it the next time then I would...

Pity they don't come with legs dolly, like the horse ones...

I tried hosing her the other day but she wasn't v keen. Fine in the bath though..

The Equafleece is a jumper with legs!
Just put a slip lead on her and hold her there while you hose her. That's what I do with my fella...it's not optional, especially in hot weather. He now quite enjoys it and drinks out of it.

Ditto .... and keep her clipped short in summer..she should be a "wash and wear" type dog.

Equafleeces have been a godsend for the cockerdog, like yours he is straight in water, the filthier the better, but is unfortunately kept in a show trim with skirt and leg furnishings which take an age to dry. He's got one jumper with just front legs and one with all four legs depending on the weather, keeps it on for an hour after coming home and then has it pulled over his head with all mud and grit contained inside.

They are very helpful with measurements and will do custom orders. :)

Dogs also look utterly adorable in them. :p

Definitely cute ;)

I'll have a looksee at the equafleece with legs tonight. . Sounds like a good idea, especially if we are away from home walking.. Do they have wrap around tummies too?

What about the winter? Csn you get waterproof suits for dogs?

Whenever wet poppy wears her equafleece, she has a florescent one with front legs so the only bit I need to wash is back legs, they also do one with 4 legs. No need to wash it just put on rinse cycle and shake out when done and it is dry. The equafleece website has measuring guides and they are happy to exchange if order wrong one. It's a god send.

Stick her in a drying bag when you get home or hose. Hosing has never stopped mine getting filthy, rolling in the run off from the muck heap was still very attractive.

What a beautiful dog Fiona! My cockapoo also has a fatal attraction to water (the muddier the better) and she has had to get used to multiple washes every day - legs have to be done after almost every walk. She gets a little treat each time so actually quite enjoys it. I am lucky in that at the yard we have a warm horse shower so that gets used if we are there - otherwise it's a bit of a back breaking job to do each leg in turn in the washing up bowl! She does dry out quite quickly though (I'd imagine that lovely wiry coat of your dog's would do as well)

I personally don't like the idea of my dog having to wear a coat when out on walks (and she absolutely hates coats!), though a few minutes in the bag to clean up afterwards seems like a much simpler solution than all the washing! Will be interesting to see your report on results! :)

Her coat does dry easily tobiano :)

Will order a dog suit and report back, bit looks like more washing of her is on the cards :(

Mine have waterproof doggie overalls that covers all four legs which is great if running through mud but doubt it would help if she is submerged in it! Got from zooplus and I think cost about £20.

I take my two to the farm daily, they get covered in horse, sheep, cow muck as well as liquid mud and I just rinse off every day. they know the routine, in the house... into the downstairs shower. rinse off the muck, and then towel dry and equafleece jumper on till they are dry. Ive not found anything effective at keeping the mud off so a daily rinse it is. Luckily I have a disabled shower downstairs so thats the dogs, I have my lovely shower upstairs :) So I dont have to clean it out every day, just rinse it round and a complete clean once a week

My long-haired bitch decided to cool off in a peaty mud hollow this morning. I am afraid she got shut up in the yard to dry before I brushed the dried gunk off later. There was no time to wash and dry her at the time! Winter is easier as the mud holes have enough water in them for the dogs to come out of them just wet and not muddy. Towelling them with a microfibre towel does the trick then.
