Well I bit the bullet and took my 5yo hunting on Saturday 3 weeks after my disaster attempt at going to opening meet. I woke up on Saturday morning unsure if I should to go as the weather was awful as was the forecast of heavy rain and gales.

However as the meet was hacking distance and the at the time there was no wind I decided what the hell and tacked up and went. I decided not to plait due to the issues I had before and just tack up and go as we would be soaking wet by the time we got to the meet anyway. I think there were only 1 or 2 horses plaited so didnt look out of place. As I approached the village I saw a couple of other horses so walked up to the pub with them. Taio stood like a rock at the meet and was better behaved than a few of the seasoned hunters, I managed to get 3 glasses of mulled wine to warm up before setting off. There was only about 10 of us out as most had looked at the weather and decided against going. Taio actually walked away from the meet looking like he had been doing it all his life only bucked once when going into canter but didn’t pull at all. I had decided to keep him in his fulmer snaffle to see what he was like before playing around with bits. We had a period of standing around as the fog was coming down and they were deciding which way to go as they didn’t want to go too far out onto the moors also at one point the pack split and we had some above and some below us so we were standing around for 20-25 minutes, he was happy to stand and wait. We stayed out until about 1pm when the weather was getting worse knowing we still had to hack home and Taio had dropped his little hint that he was getting tired but putting a small buck with his head down (he tend to do this when he is getting tired) So 3 of us left together and hacked home.

When it came to the point where I had to leave the two horses he was happy to be heading home and didn’t mind leaving and I was able to hack home on a long rein.

Now this was his 1st time actually hunting but we did a hunt schooling day where there were approx 35 riders out for a mock hunt where he was also very well behaved (a few leaps and bucks but nothing bad). So i guess this was like a second time out I will also add that he had not actually been ridden for 3 weeks due to having 3 shoes on. I had people ask if I’d consider selling him as they were all very impressed with him. But the answer was of course no.

Bring on next time

Didn't want to read and run, so well done to you and Taio (lovely name).

My daughter is currently hunting an 18 yr old who has hunted all his working life, and he can be a right fidget at the meet etc, he gets so excited!

Congrats!
Took my 4y/o OTTB mare to her first meet on Sunday too, and I'll have my 4y/o OTTB gelding out next meet. Unlike you, my aim is to sell these guys, so any interest would have been welcomed :p

Thank you, I was so happy when i got home that he was so well behaved and now really looking forward to going again soon

for years ive wanted something to go hunting with and be able to enjoy meyself and finally i have been able to go and not worry so much about coming home in one piece for those that know me know that i was airlifted to hospital when my mare reared and went over backwards out hunting even though i did pluck up the courage to take her again she never did settle.

see for all my dislike of said cretin, i knew he was a good horse when I sold him to you.

i shall however... remind you of this thread when he decides to lay down to avoid work, drag you across a field, get cast under your car, get stuck on the stable door, oh i think i forgot a heaft boot in the leg.. :D:D:D:D:D

i am in all though so pleased for you, and that you are finally enjoying riding again, and your confidence is soaring

Brilliant. Opening Meet can be eye popping for the most seasoned horse, so never a good introductory meet.

Glad the second time out went better - in fact he sounds as if he were perfect.

Well done you and Taio :) I can sympathise, I used to hunt my pacing mare and she was a total nutjob, it was a constant game of 'when shall we buck Sarah off? I know, when she's least expecting it'. She was so unpredictable that I'd wake up every Saturday morning wondering if today was going to be a good day or a bad day. I must admit, the majority were alright, but one particularly bad day I ended up flat on my back, half on an army road, half in the 3 foot ditch, unable to breathe and watching my horse gallop down the road, and people drive by looking out their windows at me (my parents were the first people to actually stop and help me - resulted in my skull being knocked out of line on my spine although only diagnosed eight years later following hospitalisation for migraines). This year I've started hunting my 4yo pacer that we bred, who is a total saint. She's taken to it like a duck to water, doesn't mind the hanging about (suits her lazy nature!), is great on all terrain, will go alone and in a group and best of all...doesn't buck! I actually look forward to going again the following week!

Keep enjoying yourselves :)

Well done for going! I've been persevering with my now 6 year old after a disaster of a first hunt of the season and a bad fall earlier this year. Now he's settled, I'll never look back! Its defiantly the best thing for us both :) So congrats! Keep us posted.
