Little update, as I am so pleased with how the TB is coming along! Our first HT is looming up this weekend, and although he's only going for a pop around the Ev80, I was feeling a bit concerned as he's only really been out on XC twice 
Cue panic mode and desperately trying to find somewhere that was willing to let me on their waterlogged courses! Finally found a willing victim, so off we toddled yesterday for an introduction to a 'proper' XC course!
He had a ball, first time jumping drops, trakehners, and big water jump. It's a great old school course, nothing tricky or trappy, just lots of timber and straight forward fences, I can't wait to go back for a crack at the bigger jumps.
