After a couple of years reading all your interesting posts I have finally joined as I now have my own laptop!!
Bit of history, got my first pony, Robbie, nearly 2 years ago having reached the grand old age of .. (well lets say over 45!!) Had (and still have) lots of confidence issues but slowly and surely I'm overcoming these. Robs is brilliant for me. Although he's 17, piebald cob, 14.1 hh, who loves to roll in poo and anything else disgusting, he's absolutely bomb proof and quite willing if you blot out the laziness!! Typical cob really!! He's very much like me, few health issues. He suffers with hay fever (especially oak tress pollen), slight asthma, agrophobia and an allergy to schooling!! Apart from that he's great! Had an issue with loading, but after a couple of months of softly softly approach, he now loads (yipee)! The next thing I have to do is try and get him to hack out alone!! Any advice would be appreciated!!
Next thing I have to do is persuade my other half to invest in a horsebox or trailer - not there yet but I'm working on it!!

Hi SG and welcome to the next best thing since sliced bread. I love the sound of your Robbie - my sort of a guy. My Sunny has a summer allergy to tree pollen and it was only when reading your post and SU reply that I realised my Sunny has a mild allergy to school work! It must be more common than we thought.

Re confidence building on hacks out alone, it's just a question of repetition. Start by going out with a trusted friend, then get trusted friend to go in front, behind, stop occasionally for a count of 5 etc etc. Then get your Robs to go in front, behind, stop behind for a count of 5, trot ahead for a bit while friend stays in walk. Eventually Robbie (and you) will feel brave enough to do a little circular hack where you start off with friend but friend goes home/somewhere else after a bit, then friend just sees you off the yard, then you do it on your own. Same as with the loading, endless patience, never tell him off, and so what if it takes a year. Sounds like a lovely partnership. WE NEED PIX!!!!

Thanks all for your welcome (and advice) - all much appreciated. I think the hacking out alone issue may take a while - I work full time and when I get down the yard I'm not always in a good frame of mind and don't want to take it out on poor old Robs! As you say, plenty of time!!
Will have to work out how to put pictures on - I feel like a schoolkid learning something new !! Never too old as they say !!
