So I have finally made the decision to give my loan horse back to her owner, we have had two lovely years together but have had lots of issues over the last 6 months and I have spent a mini fortune trying to get her right but with no positive results :( she is a 15.3h tb x mare about 22/23 years old, I know its the right decision because I cant spend the winter looking after a horse I cant ride but just wish her owner was being more understanding.

Looks like her owner is going to PTS which I am trying not to think about because she has no-where to keep her or and to be honest dont think she can really be bothered. Very very sad, I have another month with her before she goes back so lots of polo's and carrotts.

Its time's like this when I wish I had 10 acres of land so I could just retire her

sad times :(

How sad :(

But, as someone said on another thread yday, at least if she is PTS there's no chance of her being shunted round the auctions, worked to death or neglected.

Very sad though. Just make it the best month she could ever have and buy a few lottery tickets - you never know those 10 acres might not be so far away.

That is very sad.

What sort of issues have you been having?

Can I make a sugestion? if the best thing for her really is PTS, would it be kindest to do it in a place she knows, i.e. your current yard, rather than transporting her to a strage place where she may be stressed to do it...

I agree, if the owner is making that decision, perhaps the best gift you can give the mare is for her to be PTS with as little stress as possible

Sorry this is happening :(

Oh No

Very hard decision to make, looking after an older horse costs :( are her issues health or behaviour related

I know you might not want to think about it but would you not have her PTS at home with you while the sun is shining rather than unsettle her by moving her away ?

At least you will get to say good bye then and thank you, I can't blame the owner for making this choice it is much kinder than giving her away or even hunteing for another loan home that will just give her back.

There are plenty of us on this forum however that will be looking after horses that we can't ride this winter.

ETA ooops cross posted with loads of people who said the same as me

I also agree if the owner has no where to keep her and she wil be PTS which if she is costing a small fortune it maybe best for her (unsure what problems she has). Please do one thing for her have her pts at home where she is happy.

Thanks guys!

Well I have had several vets out because of behavioural issues when riding her and lameness and the last one said that she is pulling up lame on both back legs and now possibly on her front RHS which I think is due to arthritus, i could of had xrays/steriods etc but her owner wasnt prepared to contribute and I dont have the kind of money to do it :(

I agree about the PTS at least I know that she wont be pushed from pillar to post, unfortunately I cant have it done at home but it will probably be done in the village so there wont be any horse box/loading involved.

Like the idea about the lottery think I will enter every draw!!

I just read your other posts - Tell the owner that you will organise for her to be PTS with the bill in their name at your yard, you are right not to be emotionally blackmailed. But if I had spent time and money on an animal I wouldn't feel happy her going back to owners that don't care she could end up anywhere

Gosh, how hard for you :(

I kept my old boy as he had given me soo much over the 17 years I had him, so I had a vested interested, but his feed alone was nearly £100 per month in his retirement. Which i did not mind as he had given soo much to me.

Itust be soo much harder when your hand are effectively tied :(

Thanks guys!

Is this because of access I take it ?? I'd worry if my horses could be got to by a wagon - what if something went wrong and they couldn't walk ?

What a sad time for you :(

I don't know what the background is with you and the owner and the mare but it takes a lot of time and money to look after an elderly horse and as you yourself said you can't look after a horse all winter that you can't ride, so I'm unsure why the owner should be expected to have a different point of view. I guess you were hoping the owner could take her away and promise you she would have a lovely life in retirement so you wouldnt feel so bad. I'm not having a go, I'm just saying. Sadly, the reality is that at her age and with the physical problems you have described, it doesn't sound like this little mare has much chance of coming good again, if she is not even field sound, then she is in discomfort already and winter will be hard on her.

Take comfort in that you have had a lovely couple of years with her. I know it is heartbreaking but better to have a peaceful end than for her to struggle through a winter.
