Hi Everyone,

I need some advice feeling a bit down tbh :( i have been looking for a horse for a while now and on Friday i got promoted out of the blue at work (which is good :)) BUT as part of this i now have to go over to Ireland initially for a week at a time and then once every six weeks.
So now i have more money to spend on a horse but i am worried re the amount of time i will have to spend with my ned.

For people who work full time what do you do? do you have part livery rather than DIY?
At weekend i have all the time in the world i'm so

Thanks for reading :D

I have always done diy and work full time but I have always been fortunate to team up with an other livery so will only have to go to the yard once daily! The summer is fine but during the winter when it's dark and time is against u it's more tricky! Would u also have more money to spend in livery now too? If so maybe you can go to a yard that offers Monday to Friday livery ( where the yard totally looks after the horse- then u can just go up to ride if u have time) then weekends are diy so u do all the work? Good luck with your promotion x

First of all, congrats on the promotion!

I would probably be inclined to go on part livery 5 days or 7 depending upon your need. I have done DIY with 2 horses over the winter (last winter of all of the winters to do it!) with a 80 mile round trip to work and back 5 days a week full time and there were times where I couldn't remember why I had horses! I ended up battling time so much that I didn't actually get any of the enjoyment in, just the mucking out etc.

My job has now changed, and whereas I live much closer to it, it takes up a huge amount more of my time generally, and I am on call 8 times a month, 2 of which are on a weekend (like today!). The yard I am at offers part livery as a minimum and he is done 7 days a week. As much as I would prefer to be on an assisted diy or something similar, I just cannot guarantee my time and would rather be safe than sorry. I am also not in the position to return favours to other people and so would feel uncomfortable being on DIY and having others doing stuff for me without payment - in which case he was better off being on part livery!!

Sorry for the waffling! I think if you can afford part livery, it may be better to do that until you know how much time you have after you have settled into the new role. If then you can go onto diy or assisted diy, then you can plan for the changes :)

it seems you will be home more than you are away so you would be able to give the time to a horse. if you put it on full livery when you were away then it wouldn't be a problem, the horse would still have a routine and it will be taken care of.

if you can't afford the full livery when you are away then maybe it would be better to wait a while before you get a horse. if that makes sense!

congratulations on your promotion though! :)

Hi,

Thanks for the responses and for the congrats, i am really happy but nervous too :)

I am lucky to be in the situation where money isn't the issue so can afford part/full livery for 5 days and DIY for the weekend, i think in my situation that is the best option, that way like chestnut mare says if i had the time in the week i could go and ride after work knowing that all the jobs were done.

I also worry that the relationship wouldn't be there, my other horses have always been on DIY 7 days and i have felt we have had a fab bond but i'm worried that if i only visit 2 days my horse is going to wonder who i am which would upset me :( does that make sense?

Sorry to waffle :o

Congrats on the job.

You can afford livery which is great, but that doesn't mean you can't go up in the week just to ride and groom and spend time with your horse. It just means that when you can get up there in the week, you can actually spend quality time with your horse rather than doing the rubbish bits like mucking out etc!
Don't worry about the bond, that will come.
