I appear to be having HUGE problems finding a skull cap to fit me

I have not had a new hat for 9 years *slaps wrist*. My current hat is an 'International', a make I'm not even sure exists any more, and is a GPA-style peaked show jumping hat. At the time, it was great- we did lots of BSJAing so it was the perfect hat. However, now I no longer showjump- I am just a happy hacker, who is still harbouring a faint hope that I may one day go XCing (very low level

)

Anyway, I am aware that for XC, I need a skull cap, not a peaked hat. I rather liked the look of the Champion Ventair, so went to Badders with the intention of getting one.

Half an hour, three representatives and several puzzled expressions later, the Champion manager told me that the hat 'just doesnt suit me'. I tried on several different models, and the only one that did suit me was the Euro Deluxe, which made me look like a mushroom head and felt like it would give me a headache - lots of pressure on my forehead (which Mum has just reminded me I used to suffer with a lot as a child- one of the reasons I started using my peaked SJ hat, which is soooooo comfy!)

So, a little deflated but nonetheless determined, I trotted off to try a Charles Owen - the nice gold one

Same problem, only worse - it just sat on top of my head, no support or protection at all

Tried a different CO model - no good. Tried Dublin....nope. Tried Harry Hall.....YUK!!!! Gave up and went home

Today, I went to my local saddlers to try the Gatehouse HS1 which everyone raves about

Same problem - it just doesnt sit far enough down on my head, and when I went up a size, it was obviously too big. The lady who fitted me was bemused but basically it came back to the same thing - out of all the hats they stock (and they stock many!), the only one that fits me is the Champion Euro Deluxe, which I dont like the look or feel of at all

Does anyone else have this problem? It grieves me that there are so many 'nice looking' skulls (ie not just plain black with nasty nylon straps) on the market, but none of them suit my head shape. I have never had this problem with peaked hats! I am now wondering whether I should be buying a peaked hat for everyday use, and try to pick up a cheap skull cap somewhere (that fits, obviously) to use on the off chance I do go XC. Am at a loss really, I really did like both the Ventair and the Gatehouse!

non of them sit down on my head, i thought it was the modern design, the euro deluxe is definitely the deepest.
Sorry no other suggestions.

I had that problem with the champion hat, I now have a dublin onyx with a removable peak. It has an extra bit (bad wording) and the back which makes it fit my head better than other hats.

Ditto to the onyx, it's not the best looking hat but fits nicely and the support at the back make it v. comfy!

WOW - thank you Martlin!! Lovely website, and not too far from me!! I've never heard of them before, but they have three or four hats there that would be possibles for me, might take a trip out there next week!
