Ok theres a really long story to this. But long story short. A woman on the yard bought a 6 month old very pretty palomino shetland colt, she has now realised that her children need something bigger and she can also not do anything with it, as it realises she is a push over. With me or one of the other liveries its fine.

She needs to find it a home, she wanted to give it a way but people have recommended she puts a minimal price of it like £100 to make sure it finds a decent home hopefully.

Soo we advertised on a couple of the free advertising sites, horsehunter etc. But where do we try to find a home for a shetland? Any advice? Never tried to find a home for a shetland before!

Well bearing in mind that welsh sec A colt foals you can't give away! I think £100 is a little steep, I would leave the price off and let people phone you/the owners and see what's offered, stating in the advert something like 'kind, knowledgeable home more important than price'? With regard to places, certainly the above ones are used alot, horsemart always fetches an audience. Also try local tack shops and speak to any rescue centres in the area, they may not be able to take him in but may hear of someone looking for a young shetland. It would help if he was castrated, because otherwise this is another hurdle and expense for the new owner.

I would advise your friend to be careful about the £100 thing as I know the minium price an abattoir will pay for a horse/pony is/was £250 so the friend should sell it for at least that to avoid anyone buying to sell for meat for profit, sorry but just a quick word of warning. (lots of horses sales wont sell a horse/pony for less than this for that very reason, to try and avoid the animals going for meat).

Sorry, I can't help with where to advertise. Maybe you could try to advertise as a companion pony though?

I have recently managed to sell 2 shetlands and 2 dartmoor hill ponies. The shetlands i sold for £100 each and i have had a few emails about them since. The free to advertise sites are the best ones to try. Put a cute looking pic of him up and explain what he is like. I dont think £100 is too steep. I have had ppl email me about having my registered dartmoor as a companion for their horses at alot more than £100. Try replying to a few local wanted ads too, you may be suprised but some ppl advertised for ponies wanted and then never actually bother searching the for sale bits themselves.

Is it registered? If not then its value is lower. I also agree that it needs castrating in order to get a more suitable home, as it is only worth keeping entire if it is top quality, registered and suitable to breed from. Colts are not really suited to be childrens ponies!

She could advertise on here

i think word of mouth can be a good way thats how i got my shetland she wasnt advertised anywhere.

As for the price your friend will have to have a price for him as its not seen as legal if there is no money changing hands. I know of someone who had a horse on loan for ages and the owner decided that the girl could keep the horse and said that she didnt want anything for him but then found out about this law saying that even though the original owner had given him away and as far as everyone was concerned the horse had a new owner in the eyes of the law it wasnt her horse untill money had changed hands so she paid just 50p for him.

as for £100 being steep i dont think so, i brought mine in october last year and didnt get alot of change from £1000!!!! i would of been clapping my hands at £100.

you see alot advertised at around £400/£500 but paid more for mine as she has a fantastic temprament and my 2 year old can do what he likes with her!

I have just got a 20 month colt shetland for £50 and tbh the only reason i bought him is was because i was so scared of him going into the wrong hands at that price .. by some novice person thinking he would be ideal for children. But he is a nice addition to the family and will have a home for life with me.
