Hi there, looking for advice on possible saddles for my girl! Shes a 14.1 Welsh x arab- short back and very broad with big shoulders! Been told she needs a saddle that sways more towards WH style but im unsure if thats good for jumping? Also she is young and spooky so id like a saddle that i feel secure in! Any suggestions appreciated! :)

OMG welcome to mine and my donkey's world!! WHAT A MIND FIELD! I have a spooky (mental horse :) ) and I want to jump as well. I eventually gave up with the trawling though sights and trying saddles and bit the bullet and got a saddle fitter. I ended up with a new bates with interchangable gullets which is fab to sit in and hang on as well as jumping!! Mine is a forward cut one defo look for a bates!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A WH is prety straight cut - you may need a straight cut saddle to avoid her shoulders, but a straightish GP might be fine - some larger shouldered horses can even take a jumping saddle. I would find a fitter with a selection of bench made saddles (if you budget allows - £700-£1200ish) which will let you try different options. You will need a short panel (that doesn't stick ou beyond the cantle), a flattish tree, and a wide head to the tree for wide flat withers if that's what she has. Four girth straps help as well. Do you know roughly what actual width fitting she is, and how flat she is from front to back? I fit for Native Pony only, and we would definitely have models to suit, but if you'd like send me pics (I think my contact details are in my profile) I could give you more advice about other options - or post them here so we can do an exercise in saddle fitting :D

how about a vsd? there are a lot about if you look carefully :) i found that my horse with big shoulders (doesnt have a saddle at the moment) pushes saddles back with his shoulders so he needs a jumping saddle so it sits over his shoulder rather then blocking it but thats just hom as hes a weird shape
