Any suggestions on where these mythical, much-coveted creatures might reside?
I am finding lots of unsuitables, lots that are too big (I'd like 14'3 max really), the odd one that looks good but it's long gone by the time I find it.
Does anyone know of a saintly gelding cob that might be for sale? Or a reputable dealer that might have just the thing I'm looking for?

Pure luck!

Maybe try pony club?

We have a saintly 14.2 cob gelding. I truly hope we don't ever have to sell him, but if we did it would almost certainly be through word of mouth through pc. I'd put the word out to all your horsey contacts and hope to find something via a friend of a friend?

I found him four years ago nearly, through pure good luck on a Facebook ad. He was advertised as perfect first pony/first pony club pony... and he is, and more besides.

Good luck with your search

Mica Woods may be worth a try, S.Derbys/Leics. I tried a cob there last year, he wasn't right for me but I got good vibes from the yard. They often have smaller chunky cobs in. They have a tie in with a producer in Ireland who knows that they want straightforward types and sends over suitable ones. The horses are all hacked out on an insanely fast road with quarry lorries which runs by the yard, so they'll have been proven in traffic. They are usually pretty green, though.

I'm in the same dilemma as you OP, been looking for over a year now, had hoped these Easter hols to be out and about looking, but nope, sitting down at home trawling through websites and FB pages :(

It's got depressing, I'm just so desperate for my new Best Friend - and IF anything half decent does ever come up, you are basically trampled in the rush to get there for a vetting, and have pressure to make your mind up mega quick coz you know there's about six (if not more) people in the queue behind you if you show any doubt and/or ask for a second viewing.

Dealers? Well if there was an honest one around then I'd be laughing. I'd sooner go to a reputable dealer's yard than a private sale TBH as a good dealer should make it their business to see you suited, but if I knew of a good one I'd be there like a shot.

It is truly heartbreaking, feel your pain OP.

We got one of these, 14h, though somewhat green, but he is pretty much as described. Person I bought him off specialises in family cobs. Happy to pass on her info if you PM me. She's in Yorkshire.

If a saintly cob came to the market I would want to know why. The way forward is a nice 4 year old and make it yourself, then treasure it for life.

I have a cob that was imported by Clip Clop Traders. Came in as 3 year old from Ireland, broken by dealer and sold very quickly to a very novice young man, who was soon over horses and terrorised by a highly intelligent cob mare. She came back to the market at a 5 year old with serious attitude and I bought her. Clip Clop Traders have a reasonable reputation but expect to see young cobs.

There is a facebook page for show cobs and there is plenty for sale that won't make a show cob, but again they will be unmade

I'd also recommend Mica Woods. Although I didn't end up buying from her, I tried a nice young cob there last year - , nothing wrong with him, he just wasn't the one for me.

There's also Becky O'Neill in Yorkshire who has a few young cobs/Irish horses at any one time.

There are a few more I'd recommend ... PM me if you want me to send details.

This exactly :) Sorry to be unoriginal but AA has said it all for me - people simply will not want to sell a saintly cob, why on earth should they when they are such fab little horses :)

Thanks all - I totally agree those who have said why on earth would you sell one if you have one? I would love to have the skill to make one, but to be honest I don't so I need something that someone else hasn't put the work into. I will keep looking :)

Just to say OP Totally cobs say all their cobs are like this but they are not I would strongly advise against using them.

This is what I did, bought mine as a 3 yr old, he is now rising 8, has just been through the Kevin teenage stage and is now back to his saintly self, wouldn't part with him for any amount of money, I know I would be pushed to find anything better.

Saintly cobs are for sale....Mine was recently. Not because there was anything wrong with her but due to family circumstances. However she went quickly by word of mouth.

I know of a couple just come up for sale (not advertised yet) but it does depend on your definition of 'saintly' and they are not selling them for buttons. I think people expect too much from horses, for example in wanted ads people say 'must not spook' every horse can have a spook! Surely better would be to say 'must not spook and spin/take off' or 'must not jump out of its skin if a bird farts'

To me saintly is something I can get on and know, within a range, what I'm going to get. I don't want a mindless machine, and spooking is fine, but I want the spook to be a look or slight hesitation before moving on again. I want something I could take on a hack and turn left instead of right for the first time ever without incident. Something willing and fun, a partner I suppose.

Cobs'n'plods in Leigh, Lancs. Very reputable low end dealer importing regularly from Ireland. They offer two week trials for a very low non-returnable deposit. Horse can be returned no questions asked if not suitable. I've seen a lot they've sold out hunting and they are always exactly as described, warts and all.

Noted thank you - I would much prefer to buy from a home rather than a dealer, but as others have said these horses are often sold by word of mouth before they even get to market as it were.

I had one. 14,2hh HW, lovely person and safe enough I could stick non riders on him and take them hacking. He was a superstar! He had done the rounds of people in the area for years always going via word of mouth as he was such a gem. He was 16 when I got him and a bit stiff and rickety. Perfect for what I wanted which was a companion and light hack for any rider. I'd look older unless you want to work them hard

I recently sold mine because she was perfect, I like a challenge and she gAve me my confidence back I was bored to tears and wanted another project plus something bigger, if she had been 15.2 rather than 13.3 I would have kept her (although tbh i am starting to regret selling her now i have nothing safe to jump) but she went to the first person who viewed within a week of advertising so you really have to be searching everyday single day and get straight in there when you see something that fits the bill

If only i met more people like you in the horse world! It doesnt sound like you're asking anything outrageous surely most horses who hack regularly would cope with this? The cobs I know of are in Somerset, if you want i can send you contact details for them?

Nt Equine in Surrey usually has connie/Irish types in but did have a couple of nice/smaller cobs in recently.
Have also heard good things about clip Clop traders and mica woods.
Otherwise just keep trawling the ads and ask around for word of mouth recommendations- can you let your vet/farrier/instructor know you're looking?

I'd happily take on an older one, in fact I would probably prefer something a bit older looking for a quieter life.

Thank you - no not looking for anything unreasonable, and I don't expect to pay beans for one either. I will PM you :)

I know of a few, and one that may be for sale, but quite young.

The best one I knew was a FAB 14hh cob, but flexible, soft, helpful, could school to BD Nov level easily, was great for a novice, rode on the road and in the open both alone and in company. People berated the owner for paying 4.5K for her. In my book it was money well spent! Owner just wants a happy hacker and has never competed or jumped, but enjoys the pony immensely.

I know when we advertised Charlie Horse for sale (16.3 IDxTB) for 8K people said he was over priced. He did BE to Nov (although not keen on that height XC), hunted, team chased, BS to New (again preferred Disco), had BD points, was great in traffic, alone, in company, in the open, on the beach, with tractors etc. We were rather horrified at the people who came to look, amazed people thought he was over priced and decided to keep him; OH learned to ride on him. IMO he was worth double!

14hh cob sounds like perfection to me! I don't want to go charging round and doubt I will ever jump, but wouldn't mind having a go at some low level dressage in the future.

Rawlings cobs near Gatwick has a very good reputation. They have a Facebook page though I think most sell before they are put on there.
