If you share or loan, how did you find the horse? I'm thinking that a two day a week share would be good but I haven't a clue where to start looking.

FaceAche (book) local horsey group pages for two of the shares I've had, one was a response to a 'share wanted' ad I posted and the other I enquired about a share offered. One I think was via Preloved - I don't remember but I think I had text in response to a share offered ad and got a reply a sharer had been found then the owner got in touch with me a year later to ask if I was still looking (I was, it ended up being perfectly timed!)

As you're currently on a livery yard, I'd ask around if anyone knows of anything first.

Otherwise, I got all my shares from preloved whilst friends have all used FB.

After I had to have my last horse pts 2 years ago I didn't want to own another so put the word out with local friends on yards , and got offered TP , pony in my avatar
Originally I was offered him to share with his young owner , but she only came down a couple of times as she had lost interest so I took him on full loan last July
He wasn't what I was looking for , he's 13'3 , very very hairy , had terrible feet plus I found CPL when I clipped off his feathers , hadn't hacked out by himself , but he's a lovely character, very willing to learn , Im having great fun with him , and in a way it's better being closer to the ground in your 60s 😂

Good luck with your search

Usually Facebook, or sometimes word of mouth, I’ve found a lot of people have good horses sitting doing nothing but afraid to advertise the two I’m riding at the moment I found through mutual friends.

I'd suggest not asking on your yard...I've had no end of unsuitable horses offered over the years when I've found myself without a rideable horse. Abit awkward in some cases when horse is just not my type.
On the other hand, you know if the commute's doable, you know the hacking and who you could hack out with, and you have a much better idea of what the owner and horse are like. Not difficult to say "s/he's lovely, but just not me. Thank you so much for offering though."

The yard just isn't suitable, I want nice hacking direct from the yard, and it hasn't got it.

Usually via personal contacts and when I've lost one someone else has usually been waiting in the wings 😂. Jim was the first time I've done actual looking. I put a post on the local bridleways fb group and someone passed it on to his owner. I knew I needed it to be pretty local rather than all of cambridgeshire. Current rides are on the yard he was.

I’ve used Facebook, preloved, horsemart. I really struggled this time (I started a new one two weeks ago). I posted a wanted ad which elicited quite a few responses and offered photos and videos of me riding to every owner.

I also messaged/texted a lot of owners who had posted ads looking for a sharer, and also asked friends at yards if they knew anyone looking for a sharer.

It is a bit trial and error, so stick with it to find the right one!

Wanted ad on your fb page and get friends to share it, also share on local fb pages.
I found a couple sharers for my pony this way and it's how I found my loan horse a couple years ago.
Ask your saddler, farrier, physio if they can keep an eye out.

I mentioned my pony getting older and I've got 2 offers of horses on my yard to ride (although that will have to wait a few weeks).

I found my first share on a local Facebook group though I tried several before I found her and the second one was word of mouth. I never had much luck with Preloved but someone recommended that I register with Right Horse Right Home. I didn't find a share but ended up buying my girl. Buying one wasn't my plan but she was too perfect for me to pass up. Good luck, you just need patience.

We dont have a local tack ship, but many people use small ads in the shops.
My first share came via my RI and my current share from Googling.

But I aso looked at websites over the years, including preloved and Facebook county riding pages. A share wanted ad on the Facebook group might be good too.
At one point OH and I walked round yards, just asking. I was offered a share on the spot, but the bridle paths were deep mud and I didnt take it up.

I am not an athletic or remarkable rider. Both my shares have lasted long term and I am a reliable payer. That is what most people want.

As for suitable and unsuitable horses. Both my shares have been easy peasy to me as an old lady but have thrown off better riders than me and have thus been turned down by other riders.

I found my loan horse by word of mouth , I would ask your vet and farrier as well. When I was looking my vet had a horse he needed riding a couple of times a week but I was looking for full loan to be at my yard so it was no good for me..

I found a share when my mare was retired through friends and a friend found a sharer for her daughter's pony through someone I knew, so all word of mouth. If you were anywhere near me I would be very happy for you to ride J for me and I don't say that lightly.

Down south I found mine by word of mouth, when I relocated and knew no one I did a FB post. I have also used preloved in the past but didn’t get any success from memory.

Posted on a few facebook groups and horsequest with information about me and pictures and videos, what I was willing to contribute and what I wanted. Surprisingly got A LOT of responses and had to narrow them down. Had less success the other way around commenting on adverts and such.

It’s a mine field. Either horses are lovely or owners are. It’s a bit like dating but fraught with difficulty! Good luck. I’m still struggling. Facebook word of mouth or plain luck seem to be the best ways! Friends of friends have produced best options.
