Hi, I'm in need of some assitance trying to find a suitable vehicle to tow a horse box. Not looking to spend the earth or purchase a huge beast of a 4x4 but something, if possible, more compact. What's the smallest 4x4 you get that is capable if towing a box? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have a Vauxhall Monterey, good for towing and good on the long runs. It's got a years MOT & taxed to September 08. Just had 4 new tyres put on it.

Never had any troubles with it and it has winter drive on it, which stops you from slipping on ice. If your interested pm me

It depends on the weight of your trailer and how many horses
you want to pull i have a Isuzu Trooper 3.0 which pulls a ifor williams trailer with two 16.2 horses . The weight of the car is also important it cant be lighter than the weight of the trailer plus horses

none of the mini 4x4's are suitable - dont even consider the rav4, honda crv, freelander etc. the smallest suitable one i can think of is the pajero. even the SWB has a good towing weight on it.

I'm in the same position as you. I want a small, cheap 4x4. I've got a run around so I will only use it to tow. I have decided on a SWB Mitsubishi Shogun/Pajero. I'm going to look for an oldish one-not too bothered about mileage as they go on forever but only looking to spend about £1500 at the very most. Good luck x

you def need a decent size 4x4 we have a discovery 2.5 did a great job but have just changed to a wagon so she is forsale cheap too , i tried a couple of cars and even though they were capable they were no good on grass at show and i never felt safe go for a 4x4 for saftey
