Finding a Wagon

After years of messing about with a trailer every weekend I have finally saved up enough money for the wagon of dreams!!

However I have started looking and cannot find anything to even go and look at. Have tried HD, HQ and HM.

I ideally (although negotiable and open to ideas) am looking for

- at least W reg
- 3 horse
- luton with tilt cab
- either HGV or non HGV hubby has both licenses, and has agreed to be chief driver
- would like a decent living for champs etc
- budget ideally £20-£25k although there is a bit more but need to insure it and things.

I am worried people are going to hold on to their wagon until the start of next year but I'm to excited to wait that long. Would it be worth putting a wanted ad somewhere??

Any advice or hints greatly appreciated!!

Surely there must be loads about at that sort of price??! Hmm, just looked and maybe not actually W reg or younger but have you tried horse box dealers - Andrew Saywell (http://www.horseboxes.com/index.htm), JM Horseboxes (http://www.jmhorseboxes.co.uk/) , Prestige Horseboxes (http://www.prestigehorsebox.com/used.asp), JSW (http://www.jswhorseboxes.co.uk/forsale.php) Oakland (http://www.oaklandhorseboxes.co.uk/second.htm) Minster (http://www.minstercommercials.co.uk/)

Just a few - maybe see if they can source any for you?

it is trickier than you think isn't it!! lol

I am based in Wetherby, will happily travel pretty much anywhere as would rather find the right box.

Minster is the nearest to me so might go and meet them this weekend.

The OH (chief driver) has two questions, 1) is there a fridge to put his beers, and 2) does it have a flat screen TV lol.

Got my dad to go to Minster now, while I am at work dreaming of wagons

My budget isn't as high as yours but I know what you mean..... there is so much rubbish out there. When you actually go to view something it turns out to be nothing like the advert & the sellers have blatantly lied.

If you want an all singing & dancing loirry then forget looking for 7.5 ton lorrys. With all the kit on some of them...full cookers, heating, showers, horsewash, generator etc, etc then the weight of the lorry is well over 6 tons without anything on it. I contacted one seller & the lorry was marvelous but it weighed in at 6.7 tons.... leaving only 800kg payload. With that payload you'd struggle to take one horse, your OH, self, tack & remain within weight. It was advertised as a 3 horse as well

As OH has an HGV licence then buy an HGV, you'll find you'll be within weight & they are cheaper as there aren't so many buyers with HGV licences to buy them.... Good Luck with the search. I'm off to view yet another tomorrow...fingers crossed it'll be the one

Toby - I'm starting to get your logic. Just spoken to a company, they reckon I won't get what i'm looking for, for less than £54K!!!! Found one on ebay of all places but its right down south. I am begining to think that a wanted advert may the way forward.

Good luck with your hunt - you will have to keep me updated.

ringing about the top one tonight.

The rest are all possibilities depending on travel arrangements thanks for that. Have spoken to a couple of local manufacturers and they reckon they can make one for that kind of money so will meet with them asap.

sorry hunny we dont take part ex - give oakley a ring they have daily changes to their part ex stock.x

I think you should put a wanted ad in, they work really sucessfully.

Gosh someone can build you a completed lorry with chassis for 25K?? I must say i am suprised at that - with the price of steel and aluminium going up by 70% in the last few months. Choose your builder carefully hun, too many get their fingers burnt.

Try Solitaire Horseboxes in Lutterworth Liecestershire we got ours from there, he is a nice chap and you can have a good deal with him, they have a web site. Or alternativley try ABI horseboxes in Manchester, Rebbeca is very knowlegable and helpfull, their boxes are fabulous, they have a website too. As Toby said its a nightmare, and that is very true, do make sure it has a weight ticket because if you get pulled and you are over weight, you will be in a stickey situation.

You were very helpful to me with your advice, oh and by the way we managed to sell the un finished project, I sold it to some guy from yorkshire who builds for the trade just by chance a horse dealer friend of mine was telling him our story and he rung me, came that day to look at it, paid for it and collected it a few days later. As you posted ealier on this thread 25k is cheap for coachbuilt inc. chassis. I just hope no one gets took in like we did, its one of the worse situations to be in. One day i might win the lottery and can afford an ABI!
