Helloo lovely hhoer's, some friends and i would really love to find some grazing to do it ourselves, we are currently all diy livery but would love to manage our own place and leave the politics behind and enjoy our horses! Only problem is we are struggling to find land or a small yard to rent! Just wondered how others who have done the same managed it? Thankies for any advice! X

I think you just have to ask about wherever you see some.

We have a big unfenced front lawn (2 acres or so) to a large house we have permission to look after and cut for hay for free in return for looking after it - owners are older and struggle to do anything with it, so it saves them the problem. We also just missed out on some extra grazing - field has been let for the summer for hay but the owner has promised to talk to us about using it for winter grazing - he only wants short term lets as he's convinced he'll get permission for development.

I have also spotted some more grazing land a little further way with what looks like it could be a very unkempt and overgrown school that I shall be asking about.

Thanks Dubsie, thats sort of what we've been doing its just hard to know who owns what round us as it all seems to be mod land which is already rented to local farmers! Good luck with the bit with the overgrown school, sounds good! X

I think there's a website called gograzing.com haven't looked at it myself but might be worth a try. Also look in local tack shops for ads, local papers and get in touch with owners/managers of any estates close to you. There is also a website called countrysidelettings.com sometimes have yards for rent. Good luck.

Thanks tori, been looking at all of those, reckon it must be word of mouth round our way! We're Hants/wilts border down south!

Hi emmaln, I'm Dorset/Wilts border so not too far away and previously New Forest. We have Blackmore Vale Mag here which does cover into Wilts, sometimes land or yards ads, also try NFED. Sorry if you've already tried these! Will keep my ears/eyes open for you.

If you're rural, try the local PO/village shop window. The village nearest us often has grazing adverts/wanteds in - is quite a horsey area, and most people do have to go into the PO / shop for something sooner or later.

Re the field with overgrown school have been told it's been asked about before and refused, so not holding out much hope.

I never thought I would get anywhere where I am. Phoned the local estate and got offered the choice of 3 fields. I have saved an absaloute fortune as a years rent equates to less than 2 months DIY livery. I sold a load of rugs and stuff I no longer needed and raised enough to put up a filed shelter cum stables. Good luck, hope it all works out
