Basically, I took my pony out hunting for the very first time today, and she was very strong, she just wanted to take off in all the feilds - even when noone else is. I couldent hold her back atall.

When she's being strong she doesnt really stick her head up in the air. Its more head down, buck leaning on the bit? She is in an eggbutt snaffle.

Any help would be much appreciated!!!! :).X

I am a great beliver in decent nosebands what do you have on your pony? I am not sure but I would try a gag I am a great fan of the gags if they do a pony size, sorry not much help with pony size things. I am sure someone else would be able to help. You can also have two reins on a gag. Try to stear clear of a pelham and chain if you can a bit to harsh for a pony. IMHO. Hope you had a good day and hope yout shoulders and arms don't ache to much. x

helllo, shes just in a normal cavesson noseband at the mo, do you think a flash or a grackle would help? And when you say a gag, would that be a dutch gag with the 3 rings?
And I had a great day thankyou, everything aches yes LOL, but I enjoyed it alot & cant wait to go again!!!
Thanks for your help :D x

As I understand it, gags have a head raising action, so if she is head down and leaning on the bit it could work for you. Those 3 ring bits are gags, and I use a Cheltenham gag which is like an eggbutt, with the addition of gag cheekpieces. They seem to be quite popular for hunters.

I used to have a very strong pony who started almost rearing when I put a gag on him though! So I found that his eggbutt snaffle with drop noseband and martingale were the best I could do for him.

You probably have to try a few things - do you have a friend with lots of bits? Or try www.horsebitbank.com which will loan bits before you buy.

No hate those especially out hunting Been dug in the leg many a time with one of those bits by a horse/pony that had to use us as brakes.

Try a Cheltenham gag and flash. Keep us posted. x

thankyou :) well what i'm going to do as people have advised me different things, I have a friend who said I can borrow a cheltenham gag & a dutch gag, see wich one works best for me :D thanks again for your help :D x

aaah cooll :) I always thought the cheltenham gag looked really quite severe, but by the sounds of it its not too bad, :S is it a really strong bit? thanks :D x

There's obviously more leverage than an ordinary snaffle, but I think it is a lot kinder than a lot of the more modern gags, so if you do take a bit too much of a hold through nerves or whatever then it doesn't stop them dead :)
Definitely give it a go. I'm not a fan of mouth shutting nosebands/gadgets.
